On getting a maytag 806 set.
I would say that's an excellent choice! I LOVE my maytag 806 washer (have yet to use my maytag 808 dryer)!
You might not know this, but I think you might prefer a maytag 808 dryer.
The maytag 806 dryer is the HALO OF HEAT (HOH) dryer. It has a smaller door, the lint screen is at the back of the drum, and there's no buttons to push on the control panel. The control panel lights up. And I think the drum light is also at the back of the drum with the lint screen.
The maytag 808 dryer is the STREAM OF HEAT (SOH) dryer. It has a larger door, the lint screen is at the front of the door opening, and there's 4 buttons on the control panel so you can select low or high heat and regular dryness or extra dryness. The control panel lights up.
And they say that this dryer has a bigger load capacity. So your queen comforter may fit better in the bigger drum. And the drum light is at the front of the drum.
I prefer the maytag 808 dryer because I like the buttons, the bigger door opening, the larger capacity, and probably most of all, the lint screen is easier to access, being in front at the door opening.
(Also, the 806 dryer would be older than the 808 dryer)

Judy, you do realize that Maytag's 806, even with their version of an "extra large" tub, may have trouble accommodating your queen size comforter, don't you?
The 806 is high on my list of favorites, but relatively low on tub size.

I can get most queen-size comforters in my 806 and it does the job, will roll it over,etc. at least as good as my fairly new SQ.
IMO Problem with comforters is they can vary in bulk so you need to approach washing them on a case by case basis.
I think Christina is correct about the advantages of an 808 Dryer.

Thank you for the information. I will be looking for that 808 dryer. Are these washers/dryers very difficult to find? I have been scouring Craigslist, called used appliance places (who laugh at me), and visiting salvage stores (Restores). Haven't found anything that old. It seems like I will just have to "happen" across one possibly at an estate sale, maybe....I'm not feeling very confident about finding one....thanks.

Keep checking the craigslist appliance listings, using search terms like "vintage" or "older" to help zero in on ads that might produce the machines you're looking for.
The later Maytags with the brown consoles share the same mechanics as the center dial types. I believe a model 712 (maybe 710 too?) of the later style would be equivalent to an 806, but its panel won't light up.

They show-up all the time. The Estate Sales are a great source. Sometimes you luck-out and find a set that are extremely low-mileage and in near perfect condition. There was a set here recently, owned by a little old lady who had to move to assisted-living. Everything in her house was immaculate.
Just bide your time and keep checking E-Bay, Craigslist, etc.

I certainly don't want to discourage you on your 806 purchase, but if you do decide to go vintage I hope you or someone you know is machanically inclined and is inventive. Any machine that is 40 - 60 years old can't be expected to give good service w/o a pretty intensive restoration. If you are lucky enough to get a lo mileage machine that's been kept in an environmentally controlled area, you would probably be OK.
Otherwise, unless you know someone that's really handy and willing to help you or you're handy yourself, you could find this frustrating. Hope that this was worth while to you.

I think she said she had a repair guy that said he still worked on the older washing machines?
I hate to seem like i'm tooting my own horn here but, I did get lucky and found a Maytag HA806 washer & DE808 dryer set that were in plug in & play condition.
And I am so greatful that I have Roger's help & skills, that without him, I wouldn't be able to indulge in my vintage washer & dryer interest.
So just to give you some encouragement, the secret is to keep looking! I would see craigslist postings & members here would give me head ups, on 806 sets, but they always seemed to be in other states. And after some time, I did find that set I mentioned above, here in my own backyard, a few miles away.
Those were a 1979 harvest gold set. And I used the washer for about a year or so, and then I found a CA806 (washer) that was in shaded coppertone (brown) that was from 1972. That one Roger did his magic on it and got it to working. And that is my washer that I use.
My sister & brother-in-law had a new HE agitator-less Samsung washer, and they didn't really like it because the washer was making holes in their clothes, they couldn't use fabric softener because it was staining their clothes (not enough water) and they mentioned they wanted to get another washer, so I told them they would be doing me a favor if they used the harvest gold 806 because I didn't have enough space here.
Well it's been a year or so, since they've had that HA806, and I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that they LOVE the 806 washer!
My brother-in-law was amazed at all the dog hair the lint filter would collect. And my sister told me a couple of weeks ago that they have been getting alot of comments from friends who see the "old" washer, about how it's so cool that they are using a washer from the 60's -70's.
Oh yeah, and my sister also told me, when they barely had them, that they both noticed how their clothes seemed to be alot cleaner after using the 806.
So if an 806 & 808 is what you are wanting, don't get discouraged, be patient, and keep on looking. I'm sure your set will find you, hopefully soon!

As you can read of my posts, It's all I can do to find SOLUTIONS for the DE806 dryer and get a squeak from the PROs.I am getting tired of hearing ,parts are plentiful,.They certainly are not.When you do find an important part ,you will pay some cash for the 806 stuff.Besides a few really caring folks on here,I mostly hear crickets considering the HUGE amount of members.I really hope you have a knowledgeable mechanic to help you along with your dream machines,I really do.
That brown paneled set shown in another post is really your best bet as it is practically bullet proof.I have an A310 in the same family and I have been trying to kill it for 10 years.My brother bought it used and rode it it hard for 4 years.It has no pretty lights,but will pull a horse and wagon with supplies until?

Depending on what's wrong with the Avocado set in PA, that might be your best bet.
