Washer and dryer set wanted

Hello everyone!

My names Gabriel and I live in Margate, Florida 33063. I'm looking for a washing machine for my mom to replace the HE Hotpoint she currently has. I would prefer a matching set washer and dryer. If any member has a reliable 1980s and older set for sale on the east coast, between PA and FL please let me know! I don't know how to work on washers/dryers, so if one has been restored, that would be great!

I'm just learning about washers, and I don't know what would be a reliable set for mom, that she could use regularly - a washer that fills with more than 3 inches of water and actually agitates the clothes lol. I've always loved the old Frigidaire "thumper" washers. I've seen a YouTube vid of a late 70s Frigidaire washer with a little see through window on the lid - it was awesome!

I prefer washers that agitate like my SpeedQueen - long strokes with a whirring sound - instead of the quick "chugga chugga chugga" models. I've been told I'm looking for a belt driven model.

That’s my

Turquoise kenmore washer. I have the set. You might want to look for a really new belt drive washer or a direct drive washer. The direct drive washer was made well in to the 2000’s and is not a “he” machine.

Older washers don’t really make great daily drivers (used regularly). They are old and aren’t super reliable. Even a fully restored set may need some sort of repair in a few years possibly. There is no service company that will touch those antique machines. Too much liability and/or they have no idea how to fix them.

I have a 2015 speed queen and a brand new electric dryer. That would be a good fit. Send me a message if you’re interested.

Steer clear of anything Wards/Norge.  It won't last long.

 

Direct drive machines won't provide the long stroke agitation that you prefer.

 

There are 40 year-old Maytags still going strong out there.  If you can find a large tub model (four slots in the agitator instead of three), that would offer the most reliability of any vintage belt drive machine.  1987 is the year Maytag switched over to a direct drive system, so beware -- they look the same on the outside. 

 

A matched set could be a challenge, but they do show up on craiglist more often than you'd expect.  Gas dryers seem to be less common than electric.

My mom’s electric dryer is a Maytag DE 382. If a Maytag belt driven washer is available, which model should I look for? What year is the DE 382? Were they any good? Mom’s works but it has developed a rhythmic “thump thump”. I’ve read that it could be a bad roller. I’ve checked the inside of the drum and didn’t see other damage.

Does anyone have a belt driven pre-87 Maytag large tub 4 slot agitator washing machine for sale?

I really appreciate everyone’s help!

Frigidaire 1-18 or Maytag 806

Here is a pic of my 1978 1-18 set that I used as a daily driver until I moved to KW. The washer was great but I did have to replace rollers and drum seals on the dryer. If you want vintage Frigidaire, the 1-18 is the way to go.

The second pic is of the 1979 WEG/DEEG Elite set that I am looking for. I'll find that set someday.

Maytags were mentioned above, and the 806's with the lighted panels are extremely reliable.

first of all, with limited knowledge on working on a machine, options are limited...and trying to find a repairman to fix a vintage machine is another obstacle...

probably safer to stick with a Dependable Care set from Maytag, maybe from the 90's...

or a Direct Drive set by Whirlpool/Kenmore/KitchenAid.....repair techs still work on them, parts are still available, and most stuff we can talk you through...their simple to work on....

the link is a set in Orlando....not bad for 200.00.....just note, from a private party, you may have to open it up and clean and lube the machines versus picking one from a used appliance store, which may come with a warranty...

I love that 1-18 set! And that ‘79 looks retro cool. Reminds me of 2001: The Space Odyssey. The ‘70s prediction of the future!

That first Maytag set in the picture is the same set we have as daily drivers. Washer has been flawless, the dryer needed a motor, and a set of glides in the last 10 years or so that we've had them.

I have a GE spotscrubber washer, and matching dryer I would sell. Logistics from Indiana to Florida might present a problem, though.

From the looks of those Frigidaire machines, I think the designations refer to the push button controls as opposed to having knobs dials.

 

Keep in mind that a Dependable Care Maytag won't provide the long stroke wash action, nor will a GE Filter Flo/Spotscrubber, but the GE's wash action is less frenetic than a Whirlpool sourced direct drive and certainly wouldn't disappoint.  I used a Whirlpool DD machine at a vacation rental last fall and was appalled by its wrenching, jerking and noise level.  With daily use, a machine like that would drive me crazy.  Maybe it was on its last legs, but it cemented my preference for the more refined belt driven mechanisms.

Dependable Care-type Maytags have a long agitation stroke if the transmission is old-style pitman.  Short stroke if newer orbital.

Is the best washer ever, but parts are hard to get, Most people love Maytags, but I have had only bAD luck with them, for the best overall, a Filter Flo or a belt drive Whirlpool/Kenmore, don't fool with a direct drive Whirlpool, I hate them more than I do a Maytag.

In 2001, my neighbor threw out a Norge washer and my parents picked it up. We used it for about 5 years until it developed a tub leak. It had a little basket that sat on top of the agitator. It must have been from the mid 80s. It really washed well. Hindsight being 20/20, wish we fixed it. It was replaced by a Maytag Performa - meh. I don’t remember when Montgomery Wards went out of business, but I remember going there as a kid in Baltimore. They had an ice cream sundae called the Whooper Dooper.

I’m from Lochearn which is a city in Baltimore County. My mom worked for Murphy’s Mart for several years but they didn't have proprietary appliances.
