My mother-in-law's Kenmore washer may have finally died. When it tries to agitate it just makes a horrible noise. The agitator doesn't move.

We bypassed a broken lid lock about six months ago. The water fill/pump out still works.

It's been a good washer for 19 years! She doesn't sound like she really wants to repair it, she considers it to have given good service.

Should I nudge her to try for a repair? Is it anything special?

These are great machines and I’d recommend repairing it. It sounds like it could either be the agitator dogs or the drive coupling or both. Even if you have to pay someone to make those repairs it’s worth keeping in my opinion.

Similar issues

I had a customer and she had same washer, similar issues…we tried replacing the gear parts for the agitator and that didn’t work…so she said let’s just get a new one. Age was about the same or slightly older. LG front load is only thing I can recommend of what’s out there today.

It works again!

Others did the investigation/repair, but it was evidently super easy. You just tip the washer back and everything is *right there* underneath. It turned out to be a (rubber?) coupler between the motor and transmission.

Repair cost was less than $10. The mother-in-law is happy. The Kenmore DD is back in service again. Thanks for the advice and suggestions!
