30° versus 40°
It seems to me that modern enzymes should be able to handle "human" oils and fats (yech!) at 30° - given the proper cycle.
Still and all - at home I wash everything at 40° and it comes out clean. If I have been ill or one of the cats has done something creative I go up to 60°.
The main thing is - as so many have noted, not overloading, the right cycle and the proper amount of a good detergent.
The cold water detergents here in Germany just don't work in our water in Munich. But when in other places in Germany where the water is softer I have had much better results.
Oh - the test strip which came with my machine was off the scale...so somewhere over 50 degrees Clarke...I wasn't joking about the water breaking before the glass does. And it is not just lime but also magnesium...
