We need a new front load washing machine, between the $600-800 range. Any suggestions? Any brand favorites? I don't need a zillion features. Just something simple and reliable.

For the record, I had an LG that bit the dust after 2.5 years. It gave us horrible water hammer, so we would like to stay away from that brand.

I know there is a White-Westinghouse front-loader on their site. Looks like the a circa 1999 Frigidaire, very basic controls, of the sort that got some good reviews on this site. Haven't used one myself so can't speak from personal experience.

.
Well, having done this very search last year i learned a thing or to about where to look.
I'll let others review the machine, i'm better at finding the deals.
Here's a new Maytag FL machine: delivered, including tax, after rebate, for $594. See review below:

Here is the field i chose from, there are others that meet your basic criteria including models by LG, Samsung, GE, and Whirlpool.
Remember the price sometimes gets cheaper "in the cart" (when so labeled), rebates are involved etc.
But i have found this place consistently has the lowest total prices out there.

Your best buy in a new FL Washer Is a Speed Queen

Yes these will cost you nearly $1500.00 but with a 5 year parts and labor warranty and an expected life of around 25,000 loads these machines could easily last more than 30 years.

There is really no good $500-600 dollar washer any more than your being able to buy a good new $6000.00 automobile. And like a car if you can't afford a new one you are better off buying a used washer till you can save up for a decent new one.

BUT....but.....

If you can't or don't want to spend $1500 on a Speed Queen, I'd highly recommend the Maytag Maxima or WP's newest Duet line. They're very similar, and some models are very affordable.
I have the Maytag 5100 since November. It's performed flawlessly. It's a little light on features, but that's ok. It's huge, and washes well. Very quiet. Smooth spinning. I protected it an additional 3yrs for like $60 from Home Depot.

Water hammer

I believe your "water hammer" problem is more an issue of your water supply lines (more than likely) not being thoroughly secured to the studs in your walls, rather than something a specific brand of machine causes.   If you install anti-hammer devices like in the photo (and links) below, that should resolve it, or at least reduce it.

There is a thread here on AW regarding LG's and the water hammer issue. See link below beginning at reply #40:

I have another pick, this time at the top of your budget, $809 delivered including tax. It's a GE model.
It scores somewhat better on it's review, and apparently has an easy to access debris screen like a Speed Queen. See review here:

Below is the link to the machine at ApplianceConnection.com. Put it in the cart and use the same promo code, "save10" to get the $809 price:[this post was last edited: 2/25/2016-17:42]

I've owned an Electrolux 60 series washer for 18 months now, no service or performance issues whatsoever. I cost me $900 net after rebates were receieved (water district, gas co., manufacturer). The series 50 is basically the same machine minus a few cycles and routinely available for under $800.

Jim,

I hope that E-Lux lasts you.
Repair techs tell me front loaders of any brand eat up bearings faster than top loaders. Higher spin speeds.
I kick myself every time I do laundry for buying a new high efficiency machine.
It is 5 years old, and does not save water like when it was new. Top load maytag bravos X.
It was overhauled already last year under the extended warranty.
Our twenty year old Maytag dependable care fabric matic worked as good as new. My daughter loves it.

maybe it depends on the bearings...or these big behemoths being marketed today....mine is 19 years old now, 1000rpm spins always, hot water, bleach used regularly.

Ok after much debate, I convinced my husband to get a speed queen top loader. :) I just had it installed today. I hope it lasts a very long time! Thanks for your help.

My original Frig FL 2140, now in service at my neighbor's house, turns ten years old this month. No service calls or maintenance issues whatsoever in ten years. No bleach used; powder detergent in warm or hot water. The reason I bought the Elux pair was that the neighbor was between jobs when his Kenmore TL broke beyond repair. I gave him my machines, then 8 1/2 years old, and bought the new Elux pair.

Mike,

There are 2 adults and 4 cats in my house, a King size bed, a Single waterbed, several blankets and throws, my scrub uniforms which comprise a load themselves (pants, t-shirt, scrub shirt, scrub jacket...and I usually work 3 shifts in a row).  I washed two loads just tonight...whites and colors. We wash about every other day, except when it's sheet changing day, that puts in another load or two.  We have quite a bit of laundry for just 2 people.  When tony was still working in healthcare he had the same uniform ensemble that I wear.

my appliance guy takes care og 1200 washers for aptments he buys and uses 1980 and 90 may tags ..every thing new is done with in two years if your lucky mine lasted 1 year three times broke who cares if it was under warranty it was a week lost every time ..i have replaced with a 30 year old set 1 year ago.. thank you lord for old may tags
