Washing Machines In The Movies

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Jessica Tate and Mary Campbell

both had bol. harvest gold mid 70s GE washer and dryers. From SOAP. Jessica had hers in the basement and Mary had hers in a "mud room" attached to the kitchen. After the first couple of episodes the changed the refrigerators..

Maude had

coffee colored appliances in her home. I think she was in Philadelphia? I don't remember if she had a dishwasher. but she did have a built-in stove and oven.

Kate and Ally ..

had a almond Whirlpool belt drive washer in the basement. I forget the dryer if it was matching. If I remember right though the refrigerator was something old from the 50s, round corners, white, single door?

Third rock from the Sun

had a sunny yellow or could be a painted harvest gold 50s round cornered single door refrig and a newer 80s harvest gold white westinghouse gas stove that they beat up. bent the oven door.
The washer/dryer was white and 60s metal frame kenmore.
Mrs. Dubchek had almond bol, Ge 2 door refrig and Ge dishwasher in her downstairs flat.

Maude lived in Tuckahoe, NY, which is an actual town in Westchester County. (Northern suburbs of New York City.)

There's one episode that features a shopping trip to New York, where Maude and her friend Vivian get on the subway and encounter a woman who would eventually become the last of Maude's three housekeepers. I don't remember the character's name (and she wasn't featured in that many episodes) but she had a Jamaican accent and, in the episode where she meets Maude, sings a song that included the lyrics "Big Mouth Lady on the subway train. Words come out like a lot of rain" (Which actually described Maude's character!)

There's another episode, where Vivian mentions that she had gone shopping at Bohacks. Bohacks was a New York area Supermarket chain.

3rd Rock

" Third rock from the Sun

had a sunny yellow or could be a painted harvest gold 50s round cornered single door refrig "

It was a Frigidaire

"There's one episode that features a shopping trip to New York, where Maude and her friend Vivian get on the subway and encounter a woman who would eventually become the last of Maude's three housekeepers."

Hmmm, I only remember 2 housekeepers, there was a 3rd one?

That Reel mower trick was old

There was a movie I saw,1930's and it may have been the Dead End Kids, it was a talkie thats for sure. One of the kids was a trouble maker and had switched the reel mower blades for the agitator in the family wringer. After the wife complained of ripped sheets the dad took the ,misbehaven kid plopped him in the washer and sat on the lid while it was running to teach him a lesson. All you could hear was the kid screaming to get out.

3rd Rock From the Sun's Whirlpool is a late 60's multipushbutton machine. I just spent the week roaring with laughter at the first season, it just got released. Man is that a funny show, even better the second time around I'd say!

3rd Rock

IT IS funny. I have almost all the episodes. The writing was just so good. The Carsey/Warner team, thumbs up. Dick is hilarious, and Mrs. Dubchek, Sally, oh they are all great. Some shows certain characters are funny. I think of Just Shoot Me which is worth watching for Nina and Finch and Jack in that order. But third Rock was great all the time.

Maud's third housekeeper

kenmore1978 mentioned: "Hmmm, I only remember 2 housekeepers, there was a 3rd one?"

Yep. Most people remember Florida (who was played by Ester Rolle)and Mrs. Naugatuck (who was played by British actress Hermione Baddeley. Trivia: Hermione Baddeley's sister, Angela Baddeley, played Mrs. Bridges (the cook) on the BBC/PBS series "Upstairs, Downstairs"). They must have never fully developed the third maid's character, because she was only featured in a couple of episodes towards the end of the series. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of her character or of the actress who played her. (I think the song on the subway is the only reason why I remember her.) Thanks to Google, I was able to refresh my memory. The character's name was Victoria Butterfield and she was played by Marlene Warfield. (Here's a link to the IMDb's list of Ms. Warfield's work: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0912200/) The link below is to the Museum of Broadcast Communication's discussion of Maude.

Appliances in General...

In The Horse Whisperer, Robert Redford cooks on a GE pushbutton fixed-heat range, and who can forget the great old Frigidaire Flair in Blast from the Past!

As for washers...one of the Batman series had two Maytag pushbutton washers paired side by side, The Hot Chick had one of the last GE Filter-Flo sets (1995), and To Wong Foo had a near-BOL 1960's GE Filter-Flo paired with a similar dryer. Pulp Fiction had a 90's DD Whirlpool next to a lighted-panel Whirlpool dryer, in Harvest Gold if I remember correctly.

green acres applances

If memory serves me correct I'm pretty sure that the washer/dryer combo wasn't Maytag it was Gibson and I think that was what all the other applances were. If I remember right it showed the name plate once in an episode and it said Gibson. I know a way if they show the credits at the end of the show someday check and see if it says. I know that they do for the cars used in it. On the Berverly Hillbillies it was Chyrsler, so they might do the same for the applances. Just a sugestion.

Green acres and the Bradys

I think the refriferator on Greenacres was a pink 14 cu. ft 2 dr. GE with the upside down metal (chrome)"T" handle. I know she had a mobile maid pink GE dw that she washed her electric purculator in.

I agree with the Maytag combo assessment. And what a beautiful combo Gansky. You guys that have spent the time restoring these should get a reward for your hard work.

I think the Bradys had the first GE side by side (in avacodo) with a through the door dispenser. I know they had a GE wall oven and I think it was in ss but I don't remember if it was a double oven or if it had drawer. But if I remember right it had a single 3 prong outlet on the control panel?

Yes, the Brady's had an avocado green GE Americana with the through the door ice and water dispenser.

They had a Whirlpool washer and dryer. (Also in acocado if memory serves.)

In most episodes, they had an electric cooktop. (I think that it even had a griddle.) Marsha makes even makes it a point to tell her step father "We have an electric stove" in one episode. (I think that she is trying to covince her parents to let her and Greg babysit her younger siblings.) They had a gas cooktop in several episodes.

Does anyone remember the made for TV movie "The Brady Brides". The Brady's kitchen had been remodeled and looked very different -- they had a green house window opposite the island -- then the way it did on the show. I'm trying what appliances they had in the remodeled kitchen.

gansly1

It has been a long time since I saw Green acres so was not sure but as for gibson applance I remember them in the early 1970's as we had just moved to North Platte in 71 and in July of that year we bought a 1-18 frigidaire and the store had also soled Gibson because I looked at one with mom and dad and they had just come out with the double scrub tub. This was also a Kelvinator feature I believe. Nice talking to you will wright again later. but for now. Dan

How about Broadway?

There's an article in today's Newsday about how appliances are selected for kichen scenes on Broadway. (It's kind of off topic because most of the appliances that they're using are not classics, but's it's a fascinating discussion and I thought that it was appropriate for this thread.)

I'm fairly certian that the Brady's first oven was a Thermador, and they had a Thermador cooktop. Thermador made that cooktop until quite recently. In later seasons, the Brady's got an oven with black glass doors and I'm not sure what it was--I haven't seen an epesode with it in an age.

In the Brady Bunch movies, the oven was a GE.

yes but...

did the GE wall oven (or any wall oven ever made) in the Bradys home have a single 3 prong square outlet on the console?
This is the question this viewer needs to know. I swear I remember that. But why would any manufacturer make a WALL oven with a outlet on it? I mean a standard free standing stove it wasn't unusual to find not one but sometimes 2 outlets. One on each side. And usually one of them would be timer controlled for that coffee pot. But a wall oven? But wait.. haHA ... a Routiserie? Yes, No?

Thermador (and maybe other) wall ovens had outlets on the control panel for a number of years. Presumambly you could set your electric percolator into the adjacent counter (which the Brady's didn't have) and plug it into the timed control panel outlet.

Steve, it's funny you mention rotisserie, because I have an episode of The French Chef on DVD in which Julia had a rotisserie in her oven plugged into the control panel outlet--which seems odd because I'm certain that the Thermador oven she had HAD a rotisserie motor in the rear wall, but maybe I'm mistaken.
