Going WAY off subject, but possibly of interest....

Some (most?) transatlantic freighters will (would?) take a limited number (4-6) of 'foot-passengers'.
You would get a (very basic) cabin, the same food as the crew, and (of course) NO entertainment would be laid on. You are a passenger, it's not a 'working passage', and is (certainly WAS) the cheapest way to cross the 'pond'....

This info goes WAY back, well before '9/11', and may no longer be current, but a friend of mine saw a deal of the world this way some years ago...

I have no idea how/where you would find out about places, as they are not generally advertised, it seems to be something where you are either 'in the know' or not...
