Water Temp Issue

A few weeks ago I put in a new spin clutch on a friends Kenmore Series 80 washer. The original symptom was clothes were still dripping wet after the spin cycle. The machine is model 110.28942890.

Replaced the spin clutch and the machine was able to spin the clothing with no leftover moisture. But today the owner of the machine called to say that the machine will wash/rinse warm/warm only, no matter what the dial on the machine is set to. I went over there and set it to cold/cold. It filled and washed with warm/warm. In fact no matter how you set the temp control, it will only wash warm/warm.

This is not all that bad as this woman usually does all her washes in cold/cold.
The last thing I did after the spin clutch was installed was added a whole bunch of bleach to an empty cycle and set it to hot/hot. You should have seen how black that water was with nothing but hot water and bleach inside of it!

When filling this washer has a strange way of adding water. First water enters the tub from a hose at the front of the tub. Then as filling continues, it adds more water from the rear of the tub too.

I wonder what could be causing this problem with the temps? I didn't even take the cover off of the machine when replacing the spin clutch.

No Cold Water

The washer is rebelling against an abusive user, LOL.

 

It probably has a bad temp witch or temperature control board. In your area you should be able to get clothing clean if she would use ENOUGH GOOD detergent in cold water, did you try just turning off the hot water supply?

She uses Tide Pods and since it's just the lady and her husband she only washes half loads. You can imagine the sudsing she gets.

On the temp dial the left hand side selections are normal ones, on the right side in blue lettering it says "Auto Temp Control". So I assume that when you have selected temps on the right side the machine will meter out the temps as it sees fit but if you make a selection on the left hand side it should be a manual selection.

I don't know how old this machine is (she thinks it's from about 94' or so)but it's very clean inside and out (except for the muck from too much cold water washing). She's not complaining about warm/warm, just asking about it. I think it's just coincidental that this is happening, the lady think's it's somehow related to the clutch replacement.

I'm wondering if it could be in the water inlet valve? There are no control boards in this machine, it's all manual switches. It's an auto dispensing machine and the water inlet valve is quite massive, with solenoids on it. Either that's stuck on warm/warm or as you said earlier it could be the switch.

No Cold Water

There is a small circuit board in the control panel near the temp switch that could be faulty, it can-not be a bad inlet valve.

The auto temp control side is like my old Lady Shredmore.  If water tank temp is above 140 or 145, it will add some cold water to get that temp to 140.  If cold water is too cold (like in the winter time) it will add a bit of warm water.  She'd be doing herself a favor if she used the cold/cold setting on the auto temp control side.  It would still be cold but add a little bit of warm during the winter.

SearsParts shows the temp board on the Control Panel diagram (P/N 3407135, rebuilt substitute available only through service appt) and on the Wiring Harness diagram (P/N 3407125, NLA).

Not clear what's the difference between the two numbers.

Also find 3407125 subs to 3955728, NLA.

I get multiple hits on all three numbers on eBay, large range of prices.  Or maybe John has one?  Or Modern Parts House in Parma?

Does that mean that in order to get the part Sears has to come out and install it themselves?

Presumably so.  It's probably a "core exchange" deal, they want the bad board for rebuilding.

I don't like this core exchange thing.  I bought this board when I bought the machine.  NO exchange.   I am keeping my bad board unless they are giving me money for the bad board, or giving me a discount for the new one.

Old board exchange

You can keep your old board if you'd like but they give you $60 off if you give it back to them simple as that.
