I was knocking around the industrial section of East Oakland today, and found a copper plated West Bend Penguin Hot 'n Cold Server at Goodwill.
I remember we had a chrome version of this gem when I was a kid. I think it was probably used only to hold ice for mixed drinks... never remember it appearing on the dinner table... but it might have. I always remember being entranced by the penguins marching across the outside, and in those days I wasn't tall enough to see what was inside, which only added to the mystery.
It was in pretty good shape, considering. It has cool mottled brown bakelite handles and lid knob, in perfect condition. I gather a lot of these had wood, which probably didn't age so well. A little disassembly and cleanup helped spiff it up even more. But I didn't take the inner pot out of the upper outer casing, because the gasket is pretty hard and shows some cracking.
So I'm wondering: anybody know where one can get a replacement gasket for one of these Penguin servers?
