Rather than "give up" something, I've found it more rewarding to "do" something. I make an effort to get to daily Mass, and pray for others.
For those trying to give up smoking, you CAN do it! I was a four-pack-a-day man for 20+ years, if >I< did it, anyone can. Cold turkey didn't work, tried over and over. Finally I tried tapering, it took longer than expected but success finally arrived.
-Smoking forbidden at work, enough said.
-Bought a new car, no smoking in it.
-Stopped smoking in bed (really disgusting when you think of it).
-Smoking forbidden gradually at most other places (supermarket, restaurant, airplane, etc.).
-I got to the point where I could visit my parents for a weekend without smoking. The nicotine nervousness would pass after a day or two. It was easier when you knew what to expect.
-Did the same when I would visit non-smoking friends for an evening or longer.
-Stopped smoking while watching TV.
-After about a year of this, I went on vacation (sister's family and I rented a house at the shore) and just decided "this is it".
-And that was that!
Remember, you CAN do it! God bless. Now, can somebody help me lose the thirty pounds I've gained?
