I just got a great idea for a unique way of showcasing our washers and dryers. Instead of seeing each other's appliances, we should LISTEN to them! That is the whole idea behind this thread. Record the sound of your washer running its various cycles (Fill, agitate, drain,spin etc.) and your dryer running. Then find some way to upload them to this site.

What does my washer sound like?
it sounds like a 2005 LG Direct Drive 1200rpm Automatic. It beeps, plays tones and cranky motor noises. My dryer sounds like a clapped out 2002 Hoover UltraCare 6kg dryer that goes squeak squeak squeak bang bang squeak Rumble crumble rumble crumble. I believe this is how *Candy* dryers sound cos this has done it since day 1.

My Hotpoint washer sounds like water splashing quietly during washing and rinsing, during spinning the motor has an unusual "technical/mechanical" kind of noise *(hard to explain)*
The dryer sounds like a standard motor driving drum, the drum in turn powers the fan. Every 2 min interval in the last 10 mins of the cycle the machine emits a short buzz to let you know the cycle is nearly complete!

When we got our 3.8 Cubic Ft. Capcaity Kenmore Oasis washer with solid lid, I was expecting it to make more generic souds like other Whirlpool/Kenmore Washers such as the "chunka-chunka" sound during agitation and the "Whoosha-va-whoosh" sound of the pump at the start of spin. I was very surprised however when I actually heard the machine operate. Here is a basic descripition of the sounds it makes:
The machine beeps whenever a button on the control panel is pressed or the knob is turned and goes"Beebeebeep" when an invalid command is made.
When you press start, You hear the sound of filling for 3 seconds and then a loud "click" as the lid locks.
Once the lid locks, You hear a quiet, low pitched hum and a hissing sound that sounds like a dishwasher filling as the detergent dispenser flushes.
You hear the same quiet, low-pitched hum as the machine fills and a sound like water running in a shower.
If the Catalyst cycle is running, The sound of the dispenser flushing is heard for about 5 seconds and you then hear the sound of filling. Once it is done you hear the sound of the machine winding up for spin for about 30 seconds and then it winds down.
When the machine is done filling, the basket goes "Thunk" as it begins to float.
What surprised me the most. When the machine agitates, it sounds like a winshield wiper. You can sometimes hear the tower of the agitator quietly clicking back and forth and when the water level is lower you can hear splashing.
When the machine drains, It makes a gurgle sound at the start and then makes a quiet humming along with the quiet trickling sound as the water trickles out of the drain hose. Soon the basket goes "thunk" as it settles down again. You can hear the agitator mak a quiet hum as it pulses to check if the water is gone. When the water is all gone, the machine makes a gugling sound and then makes a humming sound with repeated surging as air is pulled through.
When the machine begins to spin, you hear the motor wind up and make a whistling sound. As it gets louder, it sounds like an airplane taking off and flying as it spins. At the end of spin, the motor winds down and sounds like an airplane landing as goes to a quiet whistle which winds down.
The pump turns off for about 10 seconds every one minute or so during spin. When the pump turns off, a gurgle sound is heard as final amounts of water are flushed down the drain hose. Ate the end of the final spin, after the motor stops, the pump continues to run for about 5 seconds and then turns off with a gurgle. One second later, the lid unlocks with a click and the end of cycle signal goes "Beeeeep Beep Beep Beep" 3 times.

The GE washer I'm presently pushing to sell in my used machine shop is a front access Ge washer with the lighted control panel. I love to here it kick into high spin about 1 minute after the final spin begins. If the 1st speed wasn't sufficient, the 2nd spin speed is almost scarey if you thought about getting your arm caught in it. I think this is same spin that DESTROYER speaks of in his post about the 95 Hotpoint. I assume he is talking about 1995 being the 1st year od production on the front access. Cool ass machines but I still question as to why GE would put a stainless steel tub in this machine in some models since it is a throw away machine. Much like the Bic lighter.

As for my current F&P machines, which both have very non-traditional laundry machine sounds, they are as follows:

GE vs. LG sounds
MY dad's GE washer: I hear a hissing sound as the water fills the tub. normal Agitate: reminds me of the Whirlpool direct drives as the sound described, but a tad bit slower. It then slows down to gentle agitate which reminds me of the filter-flo agitation. The drain cycle reminds me of the pump from a dishwasher running when the washer has no more water. Spin cycle: Clunk! Thump! About a minute later: Clunk. Rinse cycle: repeat.
My dad's matching dryer sounds like somebody flooring the accelerator on a car.
My mom's lg: 5 dings up in tone. Ding. Clunk. Whirr 2x. I hear the water load cycle. Main wash: quiet whirring with water inside. Steady humming of recirculation jet. Hissing as water enters the bleach dispenser. slurp. vibrating drain pump. When the washer spins, it sounds like a jet plane taking off. rinse cycles repeat: first deep rinse with circulation jet running. Third and final softener rinse just tumbles clothes through water. Full speed spin may sometimes sound like a black hawk helicopter. Ding Dong several times.
