I'm sure the "notices" vary between makes and years made...

I saw a Maytag in a used appliance store long ago that had a label stickered on, which stated:

YOU WILL NOT GET GOOD RESULTS & WILL HAVE DAMAGED CLOTHES IF THIS LINT FILTER IS NOT KEPT CLEAN AND KEPT IN PLACE!

--Or something like that...

The message on the lint screen on my Bosch dryer says to clean before each use.  I believe the lint screens on my Lady Kenmore and Elite dryers had the same message.  I, however, have always cleaned the lint filter on all my dryers after each load.  I have always kept a clean 1 inch paintbrush in my laundry room to "sweep" the filters after I pull the lint off.  No, I'm not anal.

The message on my Fisher And Paykel basic timer dial dryer basically says this:

Soap and Water

Bi-weekly, I clean my dryer's lint filter with soap and water to keep softener residue from building up and slowing performance.

Anyone else do this?

Mine doesn't talk ;-)

But there is a light on the control pannel that comes on that reads "Check Lint Screen"  When you first power up.

This light goes out when the door is opened. 

 

I actually make it a practice to clean the screen before removing the clothes, and then it's clean for the next load.

The top mount pull out filter on my Kenmore 80 Series (Daily Driver) Says nothing...but I do clean it every use...And I'm with Malcolm, I Wash the lint Screen regularly with soap and water to remove Fabric Softener residue

Seem to recall our 50s Westy, the filter popped up from the rear when the door was opened. 80s Lady Kenmore compact (current), sticker inside door says 'clean filter before each use'. I do it after, just to be 'done' with that round of laundry.

Hey Malcolm,

You've given me something else to think about.  I think I'l start washing my dryer's filter too.  I use liquid fabric softener but it makes sense to do this.  Thanks for the tip.  Jim

Mine, from the portable, reads:

"Clean after each load, filter cleans best when wet.

To release lint, tap filtering area on firm surface.

Flush loose lint from filter reinsert firmly in place."

My DG408 (1977, center dial, daily driver) says "Clean Before Loading", but it's my practice like several here have already said to clean the screen after emptying the dryer. I also clean the lint filter in the washer after each wash. After all, who wants to come back to dried washer lint and try to remove it? Yuck!

I remember when I got my first Filter-Flo pair back in the mid-70's reading GE's instructions for cleaning the filter. They said to first touch the tip of your finger to your tongue, then draw your moistened finger across the lint screen and all of the lint would come off. It works! I've always followed those instructions, no matter the brand of dryer.

CLEANING MY DRYERS LINT FILTER

On my 29" WP built gas dryers I always put the load in and clean the lint filter after I start the next load. This way the dust that is produced when you remove lint from the screen is sucked out of the house. I also don't clean the filter if it just has a very light layer of lint on the screen from the last load. A lint filter will filter out much more lint and keep the duct work cleaner if it has a thin layer of lint on it already.

While we're on the topic of lint filters, I'm amazed at how fine the mesh is on my 2010 Frigidaire dryer's filter. My Frigidaire 2002 was more screen-like, with larger holes.

There's a very wide-holed "screen" on the vent that comes out of my house. I used to have to take the thing off and clean the accumulated lint out of it about once a month. I've had to do that only twice in the year I've had my new dryer. It is apparently not letting any lint escape! Hopefully it's all being caught by the fine mesh filter and not building up somewhere within the dryer, LOL!

Tell me. Late 60s, 4-way rent house with a nice centerdial 'Tag, I was the only one even aware there WAS a lint filter. That stuff is like cement once it dries.

Great stories so far! I clean my lint off after the last load, before the next load, myself...

I also use a blunt object to remove the clumps of lint around the trap & even have a long-handled lint removing kit, too...

(Though still can't yet get it through my duct-work! My vent is actually a "louvered door"!)

So far, nobody's told me whether anyone's lint trap says anything"Audible"--that is, do any of you have a Lint Filter ALARM?

the only one that I owned that ever made a sound is a 1985ish Lady K, Ultronic care Dryer, it had a whistle, which would sound if the filter wasn't cleaned before the machine was started for the next load........probably one of the better choices rather than a little light, which would get ignored

My KitchenAid dryer has a whistle-signal when the filter is obstructed.  I don't think I've ever heard it, never let the filter get clogged enough to trigger it.

I have only washed the lint filter in my Frigidaire dryer (daily driver the last 13 years) 4 times since purchasing it. The first time was 4 or so years ago. I’ve only needed to clean it about once a year since.

My Maytag 9900(?) electronic control dryer (Thank you again Russell!) has a magnet on the lint filter and of you don't pull it out before starting it again, the display shows "CHECK FILTER" in red.

Since my arms are full after emptying the dryer, I always clean the filter just before doing the next load.

Wet Cleaning

Yeah. It is just a habit I have gotten into as I have grown tired of cleaning out the long exhaust that runs above the garage. It can be so hot in the attic space, I hate going up there unless I have to. Keeping the dryer filter in tip top shape will minimize the duct cleaning. If I don't do it on a regular basis, I will end up forgetting about or letting it go too long.

KEEPING LONG DUCT WORK CLEAN

Malcolm how does keeping the filter extra clean keep the duct system any cleaner? A slightly clogged filter will trap several times as much lint, it may not dry as fast however. But not nearly as much lint can escape into the duct system. Even just the act of removing the filter in most dryers destroys the lint seal that develops around the edge of most lint filters and doing so allows more lint to bypass the filter and end up in the duct system.
