Going to put the tub cover on my Maytag A 806 and was told to use rubber silicone? What exactly is it? Went to Loews and they had no idea what I was talking about. It is the same as WD 40?

Should I be using anything else to prevent leaks when the tub cover, rubber gasket and retaining ring are put back together?

When I had my Maytag repaired last year, the guy used something that looked and smelled like Permatex, or Form a seal. It was red in color and a little thinner than the silicone stuff you buy in a tube. It was transparent but dark ruby red.

I had to wait 24 hrs before I could use the machine, and no problems so far.

I buy my RTV silicone sealants at ACE Hardware near home.

Some like blue, some like black, some like the Ultra Blue - whatever you choose will work fine for making a good, tight water seal around the tub cover.

What Maytag are you working on, and what are you repairing/restoring? Pictures forthcoming?

Best of luck, Gary!

Working on getting the Maytag 806 back together.

Any suggestions on putting the tub ring back on?

Does the rubber silicone go on the edge of the outer tub, then the rubber gasket and expansion ring?

How does the upper tub ring fit with the bottom outer tub?

Gary:
I've never used any kind of sealer-just a new gasket- and have never had a leak. I always use new bolts though.

Another question

When the machine goes into spin, it sort of hesitates before it kicks in. Is this normal? Is something slipping?
The machine has new belts and new springs.
Could the motor go into overload doing this?

I forgot all about that 806! You have quite a few Maytags now - they're all blending together and my mind's a sieve!

I use two wooden coat hangers for spacing of the tub cover on top of the spin basket. Place the cover on the tub, resting on the spin basket, then put the coat hanger ends on the top of the basket balance ring, under the cover. When you have that in place, you can put a thin layer of silicone on the rubber gasket, fit into place and replace and tighten the clamp. The new bolts are a good idea if the old ones are stripped, corroded or rusty but I've cleaned them with a wire brush and they usually work just fine.

Can you hear the motor stalling (buzzing - dimming the lights) when it tries to spin or is the motor starting and it takes a second or two for the belts to grab and begin to turn the mechanism? Sometimes when I've put new springs and glides on a motor, the springs are pretty tight and take a short while to loosen their firm grip enough so that things run perfectly again.

Thanks for the hints on putting the tub cover back in place.

The motor starts, the lights dim, and then it takes a second or two to grab and turn. It is almost as if the motor is stalling. Is this normal?
I don't think this was happening before we turned the machine over to remove that pesky lens cover.
Could turning the machine over create this problem?

Yay!

The Harvest Gold 806 is back in service.
New tub gasket and absolutely NO LEAKS.

Washed a load this morning. Ran like a charm and did not need to add the Permatex. Spray rinse, no sudslock.

Will make this my Daily Driver sitting proudly next to my matched Neptune set(from 1997).

Thanks to everyone for all your support and help in getting this machine back into service.

It has been a great learning experience.

Actually

Had the serviceman reinstall the rubber gasket and tub ring on Friday. Toggles and I put it together last weekend only to get a leak.
He only charged me for a service call. This service man had repaired two of my appliances in the past My Neptune washer....(bad board and would not spin)and also put a new timer on my KitchenAid(22 series).

I am so glad to have this machine in service once again.
Never knew that little plastic piece could cause so much trouble.
