Is it a dishwasher? A washer? A Dryer? A range? A self-defrosting freezer? A fancy fridge?

What is the ONE full-featured appliance w/ all the bells & whistles, that you could not live without????!!!!

I have a 1978 Whirlpool Model RFM 7800 Mark Series Microwave oven that has every bell and whistle and still works like a charm. I have never used a recipe out of the 300 page cookbook that came with it or the probe thing. Has every power level on 4 seperate setings. I push cycle 1 for a minute and see if it is reheated and repeat if necessary and sometimes use the defrost. The digital clock has never lost a minute in 34 years. Before there was such a thing as Microwave Popcorn, I thought I would try and do my own, bad mistake. Took regular popping corn, sprayed the covered pyrex bowl in Pam and turned it on. After 3 minutes, 1 cernal popped. I put a pot holder on and went to take the bowl out and it exploded. Last microwave experiment I ever tried.

I know I'll sound boring

but I can't honestly think of any appliance that I need that's TOL. I want appliances that do a competent job at their given task. This often means rising above entry level. But at some point, it seems like all one gets are fancy features that don't do anything but add convenience and price and more things to break.

I also prefer buying cars with features like manual windows for the same basic reason.

Some TOL appliances would be interesting for a collection. I'd like a 60s Lady Kenmore washer. But for daily use I'd opt for a lower end model from the same era.

I had a 1977 Lady Kenmore washer and dryer that I loved. They broke down shortly after I moved here in 1999.

The TOL that I own now is the 1954 Frigidaire Imperial Cycla-Matic fridge. It has a porcelain exterior, butter warmer, and serving tray. The only model above this was a version of the Imperial Cycla-Matic with a separate freezer door - top mount.

I don't know if the Chambers Imperial range counts as it is in pieces for restoration.

In this day of throwaway appliances, the more you spend the more you throw away. And the more whizbang they are the sooner they break down. Just give me something conventional that WORKS.

With a TOL DD Whirlpool, in 2005, you got:

Porcelain top and lid;

5 water levels;

Delicate cycle with intermittent agitation;

Gentle (slow wash/slow spin) cycle.

Every other Whirlpool I could find in stock was either one speed, or had maybe 3 water level selections. I didn't think of looking at the catalogue, but I think all of these things are useful to have.

For me, it has to be three things:

- It depends when it comes to the washer. SQ isn't considered to be very TOL, in fact the feature set of their machines is actually BOL, but the price is TOL. If I was going to buy a SQ Top loader though, it would be the TOL model.
- Dishwasher must be TOL. The more features the better.
- Stove - Depends on what those features are, but must also be TOL.

Should have titled this: FAVORITE top-of-the-line appliances

Well, I'm fairly spoiled by my dishwasher allowing me to put anything & everything inn it & it all comes out clean!!!!!!

My clothes washer & clothes dryer are "everything machines", but believe me, if they were a few models down, I think I would be just as happy as long as I got two speeds on the former & automatic drying on the latter... So many washer shave Infinite Water Levels, in needing to conserve water, that hopefully even a modest machine would have that, but I do like my drum light & I don't think you even have to go up to the highest-end model to really get that... (Next-To-Highest?)

I think I'm hanging by my own petard! I love my Five-Burner Stove! I'd be lost without that middle burner, little often that I get that big pot! But in order to follow the rules of my own topic, have to pick one, and in that I'd be happy w/ a four burner range, as long as it was gas & self-cleans!

The fridge, I just like the SideXSide configuration and am just lucky I got ice & water through the door (as ALL SxS's seem to do!) but to get the ice STORAGE on the door? Well, just lucky, I guess!

Really, a top-freezer, as long as I don't have to juggle ice trays to make my own ice, would suffice!

Microwaves--given the new ones cook everything--I left off, but they count... Just that it's hard not to get the Best One, there...

Thanks, everyone...!

I bought the TOL KDS 18 because of the racking features and the rinse agent dispenser. There was a $40 difference between the Imperial and the Superba, but the Imperial did not come with the rinse agent dispenser. The cost of the dispenser was $40. Case closed.

TOL GE ranges had the SensiTemp which I enjoyed for the variable size settings. The "Griddle" setting on the 30" ranges only heats the outer ring of the element and does not couple it with the rear element. That gives perfect heat distribution under a 12" skillet

I chose an A806 Maytag because of the independent wash and spin speed selections and the fluorescent light. I already had the DE806 and liked it because of the light.

Chambers TOL

and biggest 42" Gas Cooktop in all Stainless Steel with built-in Griddle, Broiler, and custom modified "Plane of Flame" dual row daisy burners... beats the heck out of any Viking, Wolf or 5-Star!

Wirlpool Gold side by side fridge with measured fill water.  Love it.  It was a gift from my mother-in-law before she passed away.  She had always wanted a side by side and said her daughter and favorite son-in-law would have one.  My parents always bought top of the line Sears appliances and my wife's parents always bought top of the line Whirlpool appliances.  I love my Bosch Nexxt Premium washer and dryer also.  I have a Whirlpool Gold dishwasher but I've been disappointed with it.  When it goes out I plan to replace it with a Bosch dishwasher.

actually everything in my kitchen is TOL.......once you get somthing like this, you can't go back.....each piece has every bel and whistle on it.....rather have it to use, than wish I did......its like having a washer and dryer in your house right now, would you buy the next house that these are not equipted for?....and go back to using a laundromat....

cars are the same way....bought MOL once, and forever wished I got TOL with certain features of convience.....now it is TOL.......looking at new Jeeps, and I want the same features again....so it has to be the "Limited" version again, although there are two more, OutLand and the SRT8, but thats more on the looks side rather than add any features....

Funny but I tend to shun the TOL appliances also - the 'Latvian frugality gene' from my lineage is clearly a key influence in my purchases ...  My father would always say 'More gadgets, more problems you got' and I seem to have always bought accordingly.

I'm more likely to buy TOR (Top of [Consumer Reports] Ratings) than TOL, usually the highest-rated "Best Buy" item.

Bought my Hotpoint gas stove, Kenmore dishwasher and KitchenAid food processor that way, and they all perform like champs.

CR Best Buys

are just that, we've always had great luck with them.

Though I love TOL Chambers cooking appliances, for d/w, cars, and other appliances do agree with Paul... less elaboration means less to go wrong. And I hate cars with power windows, seats, moonroofs - they will always break eventually!
