What is the real story regarding GM/Frigidaire Washers?

"Snorge..." I don't think I like that. I find Frigidaire, Montgomery Norge and GE Filter-Flo's the most interesting machines. And yes, I believe the Wards/Norge burpalator agitator is second best to GE's filter-flo. I have both and they are excellent at lint removal. My GE has the straight-vane agitator and even large loads have great turnover. And my Wards Signature and Norge machines both have good turnover. My 1-18 can have issues if overloaded.

That Frigidaire Unimatic drains the tub WAY FAST! WOW! One must have to have very free flowing drains

In fact, it drains the inner tub in the outer tub and the water is then pumped from the outer tub at a slower rate (like on all solid-tub Frigidaire washers).

That's a pretty neat design.

I'm still trying to learn about the all the various ways in which the different machines operate. Until coming to this site, my only real experience has been with a mid '80's Whirlpool.

and I love my Frigidaires too! Maybe the Unimatics tangle if loaded carelessly, but the 1-18's never, and the "Fringe-Frigidaire" with the live water action three ring agitator works wonders without tangling.

 

12 pound tub + three ring agitator = WonderWash !

The one unforgivable flaw in the diagram of the cone-shaped agitator is that it shows the water being pumped out of the agitator in a horizontal direction. There was nothing in the agitator to direct the water into a horizontal pattern. The water went UP and hit the underside of the lid, not out towards the holes in the tub. I can't help but think that there was a modification made to the agitator that eliminated 4 little pieces of plastic that were supposed to redirect the water. They must have been subject to breakage is all I can figure.

When Frigidaire "reinvented the washer" and introduced the 1-18, CU rated it just below the Maytag. IIRC, the noise level during washing was one of the the reasons for 2nd place. I'd have to concur as the 1-18 my partner and I had was exceptionally loud, especially when the water level was set a maximum. It was quite reliable over the 10 years we had it, the only repair it ever needed was a spin clutch replacement. To this day, I regret that we sold it along with our house. With the possible exception of rollover of stiff jeans, it's performance was superb.

1-18s are great

and the rinsing is amazing. just one spray rinse and the water is typically pretty clear in the deep rinse. Only thing to be careful about is how much detergent you put in. It takes any detergent you use and makes tons of suds....like a comedy show if you aren't careful. Its also true the sound might annoy some people. When it's agitating on full speed it can sound like a train coming in the distance. My aunt had hers in her kitchen and always had to turn it off when the phone rang. LOL

A discarded '60's Clamshell Frigidaire was a surprise to see one family had been using...

Obviously one young member of the family handy at fixing things could have been the one keeping it running for a seemingly twenty years...

Love my Frigidaire one to 18 washer

After Jason and I added insulation to it, the machine is actually about the quietest machine I own.

There was no emphasis on quiet washing machines when these were made GM could’ve easily done what we did to the machine to make it quieter

Overall it was a great piece of engineering and a darn good performer. I seldom use it anymore because of the amount of water it uses however, i use the front load washers and I use my whirlpool resource saver when I do use a Toploader.
