I don't know how long ago it was, but I wrote in here to see if anyone had a box of vintage Tide with the woman on the back pouring the detergent in the washer.

Well, as luck would have it, I finally came across that picture. There's a box of Tide (Improved at that) that's going on EBay with a starting bid price of 19.99. If I could afford making an offer on it, but can't do so at this time (the six letter word BUDGET has quite a bit to do with it). However, I'm hoping someone on here might see it and want to add it to their vintage detergent collection.

As for the picture itself, I love the Joan Crawford-ish hair style and eyebrows. :)

I Took a Look:

And you're right!

That hair and those eyebrows are straight off Joan Crawford in 1953's Torch Song.

And for those of you who have never seen Torch Song - you need to. Just get ready for an experience stranger than anything John Waters ever filmed.

The strangest part? Joan was serious when she made it.

I had this queued to be sniped before the thread appeared and was worried it would touch off a mini bidding war, but luckily nobody else is interested in such things! So it's mine now.

The same seller had an unopened box of Breeze, with Cannon facecloth, for a buy it now price of $49.95. Somebody snatched it up pretty fast. I would have loved to have it, for half the price....

A box of Duz with a tumbler inside went for over $200, believe it or not. Eeyouch!

Allen, when an auction is ended, you have to click on "view original listing" to see all the pictures.

Here's the back of the box so you'll know what they're talking about. (I was thinking more Joan Alexander than Joan Crawford myself. She looks too good-natured for Joan Crawford!)

I don't think I'll use any at the moment, Buck. I have boxes of Punch as well as All with Bleach Borax and Brighteners open and that's keeping me busy. Also, i have a newer box of Tide XK that might be next on the use list, since the box is not in that great of a shape.

I ended up with two boxes, and couldn't resist using one of them.

After three loads, I can say it is the Tide many of us remember. It says to "start" with 1 1/2 cups in a top loader -- as per past practice (it all came flooding back) I tried one rounded cup in a medium load (WP DD) and that seemed to be fine. By the end of the cycle it has whipped up a good head of suds, but not anything excessive.

Rinse water is fairly clear, better than most newer powders.

Adding a Tide Boost pack for some dirty whites, things came out as clean as with current Tide With Bleach plus phosphates -- not too surprising. Without adding anything and using warm water, some barbecue sauce came out of a dress shirt, no problem.

All scent has gone, and the powder is getting a bit yellowish, but otherwise can't see any obvious signs of chemical breakdown. It isn't lumpy at all.

Wish there was more!
