I have a Maytag washer with a build date of May, 1993. I was led to believe I had a
model A612. The manual I have covers "08", "10" "12" models. Looking at the manual that I have does not show an orbital transmission. It shows the one they starting to use after the orbital type. Model of washer is: LAT8840BAW Serial # A5111153 HK.

LAT8840BAW is the model tag?  The timer is at the right on the panel?  Then it's not an A612.  An A612 has the timer in center of the console.

Parts diagrams for LAT8840BAW show an orbital transmission.

Pitman transmission was discontinued for orbital circa July 1989.

The type of agitation action confirms which is it.

Orbital is a fast, short stroke.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GUyu85HjIQ

Pitman transmission is a slower, longer stroke.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmdhYNQyVz0

Now I'm Confused

My 1987 A712 has the timer on the right of the panel, which is brown with brown buttons and brown timer knob.  It has its original pitman transmission.

The 12 series ended in 1989 although most ending series spilled into the first 4-5 months of the following year, so maybe early 1990. There was a very brief 13 series that ran from 1989 to 1990. The orbital transmission debuted in July 1989, towards the very end of the 12 series models.

The running gear was the same from the pitman trans to the orbital transmission and when mated with the proper sized tub, are swappable from 1966 to 2006.

There were some changes for the 1994+ models that may or may not have began in late 1993 with the most distinguishing factor being the larger lid cover. These used a different lid, tub cover, inner and outer tub, fill flume, front cover mounting (clips instead of screws) and water valve. May be some other changes I have missed.

According to this site, you have the older style cabinet and tub. The 8/10/12 service manual will work for everything but the very specifics, like diagnosing the timer and switch banks.

"An A612 has the timer in center of the console."

Maytag changed the timer from the center to the right side in 1980 with the 10 series machines and it remained there until 2006.

Thanks for all of the responses. The manual I have states that it is for 08,10 and 12 line models. Near the back of my service manual, it has 30 or 40 pictures of the different consoles. My console looks just like the A612 and the tranny in this manual must be the pitman tranny. I am positive I have an orbital tranny.Build date on my machine is HK 1993, May.This machine was my parents. Took the agitator out and noticed that the clamping nut for the inner tub was about 1/2 to 2/3 gone. (corrosion) I suspect. I have a water softenter ( we have well water). The threads on the spline were somewhat messed up also. Had to take the inner tub out so I could use my drill with a wire brush on it and clean the threads. Saved enough of the threads so that I could tighten the nut.
The top cover , which on my washer is porcelain covered metal, was rusted and had a few small holes in it. used JB weld epoxy on the holes to fix them. that stuff is very hard to sand. The outer tub's lip where the tub seal goes was in bad shape. alot of the lip was stuck to the old tub seal. used JB weld epoxy stick to form new sections of the lip on the tub. That stuff works well. Sets up in about 60 minutes. sands very well. Then I used some rustoleum Hammer paint and painted the tub lip to maybe help retard further corrosion. Can someone give me the part number of the manual I need.

thanks
