Mostly were the Linhause vacuums are used are in the buildings in Washington DC. Specifically the White House, Peantagon, and Capitol Building(I know I left something out here). I don't know what they use in the other buildings around the country. The reason for using the Lindhaus vacuums is filtration, specifically after the anthrax problems.

I have had no problems with my Rainbow at all.I have 2 cats(one long hair,one short hair),a ferritt,and a shi-tsu living here.I vacuum twice a week and my room mate being asthmatic usually goes into a serious coughing spell if I use my Kirby or Eureka uprights.So,I use the Rainbow and it not only picks up all the hair and dust but keeps it from going back into the air.I use the beater bar upright attachment for our carpeting and the succion hose w/attachments for the furniture and window ledges,the ceiling fans,corners and edges.I put some "Fabuloso" in the water to make everything smell nice and change the water three times(it isn't really that difficult unless you're weak or too lazy to do it.)during the cleaning.My apartment is a 2 bedroom 2 bath and it takes about a half an hour from start to finish to vacuum the entire place.

Beater bar
It seems that all the new vacuums lack beater bars. Brush-only vacuums don't clean very well or raise the nap back up. The beater bar is essential for vibrating up the dirt and dust than have been tracked into the nap.
Does anybody still manufacture a canister vacuum with a power head that has both brushes and a beater bar?

Please tell me more about the Airway canister. Who sells it, what does it look like, what does it cost, how many horsepower or amps does it have, does it use disposable bags, &c.
(I have a 4 horsepower Eureka Ironsides canister that I absolutely love. It has more suction, and cleans better than any vacuum I have ever used. The attachments, especialy the floor brush, work so well. However, it's almost 20 years old, and I can't expect it to last forever. The few canisters I see in stores are POS's. It would be nice to know what's out there in case I should need to buy.)

Govt vacuums:
The Cohen building I worked in the DC area(Govt office building) Had a Spencer central vacuum system-the outlets for it are still in the hallways-they haven't been used in MANY years-asked the building engineers if the Spencer central vac equipment was still in place-they didn't know or know where it was-I wanted to see it-i loved exploring the building as well as working in it.The place was built in 1939.The cleaning contractors there now used Sanitaires and what looked like "Pro-Team" or similar backpack vacs.the backpack guys came early in the morning and vacuumed bare floors and other items.the Sanitaires stayed all day.I beleive the Lindhaus vacs were used in the Navy Hospital-medical Center in Bethesda Md.I am trying to find a GSA catalog in the place I am at now and see if the Lindhaus is listed.As it is now-most Gov't cleaning is done by contractors-part of the Privatazation acts.As far as filtration-don't think any vacuum-maybe except a true HEPA "Hazmat" vac will filter Anthrax bacteria or worse yet-its spores.When anthrax is suspected in a place-it is usually fumigated with Chlorine or a similar material-the building has to be evacuated and then fumigated-then aired for several days.
As for beater bars-those PLASTIC ones have to go!!!Stay with the polished metal ones Hoover used to use.I had a rug get torn up by a vac with plastic beater bars years ago-it started with the vac picking up a small peice of metal-then the plastic beater bar was nicked and cracked-then the sharp edges tore up the rug.The plastic bar turned into a cutting and rug destruction tool.Instead-would look into Royals "Brush Stiffeners" used on their Classic style uprights-these combine Beater bars and brushes together.Work REALLY well-a sunning demo done by one Royal salkesman was to show how the vac picked up hardened mud from a carpet-did it very well-I have done that myself-If I get mud tracked in-just let it dry and pick it up with the Royal upright.Probably why many cleaning services like them.The rug I had above I had vacuumed it before for years with a Hoover with a metal beater bar.It died so I replaced it with another that had plastic ones-big mistake.

When I bought my first NSS Model "M"I lived in an apartment in the DC area at the time-I admired those machines so much-always looked at them in the "Daycon" cleaning janitorial supplies catalog.Was in 1978 when I bought it-used a bonus I got from work-what a thrill to call Daycon(I ordered things from them at the radio station)and order that M1 for myself-they were flattered I was buying one to use at home-and I used it at work too-until I ordered them one to replace the Sears canister.anyway-the Daycon delivoryman stopped at my apartment house to bring me my machines-A Royal upright and the M1.There was a whole fleet of a dozen of them in his truck-asked where they were to go-He said to the White House.And I still have and use that vac.Wonder if those White House ones are still going-wouldn't be surprized if they were.At the time the Gov't used a lot of M1's.At the building I worked in in DC-they had a Spencer portable vacuum-It used to be used in the disc recording cubicles to collect the disc cuttings from the disc recorders.when the disc lathes were retired-the spencer vac was used as a general "shop" vacuum-loved using it to clean the studios during studio PM.It had a cloth shake out filter bag and a dirt cup under it.The motor was made by Lamb-and the motor blower on it looked like a miniature pipe organ blower!!It ran at only 6A but gave the airflow of machines today running at 10A.Repaired and lubed its motor.don't know if it is still there.hope so.

Overhere in Europe the trend seems to be to more power and more plastic. And lower prices too. Yesterday I made a trip to Germany and a supermarket there had a Siemens canister on sale. Compact model, only €99.- ($120.-) and a 2400 Watts motor.
Most of the time more power and plastic don't mix-the plastic housing can crack from the heat and vibration of the more powerful motor.Hi-end vacs should be metal-buyers expect it.
