My A/C Scheme....
....is to "pre-cool" the house down in the early morning hours (5 a.m.-7 a.m. or so) to 68f.
Then, the thermostat goes up to 78f.
When the A/C comes on (usually late afternoon or early evening) I turn it down to 74f.
At 7:30 p.m., I turn it down to 70f and then back up to 78f when the 70f temperature is reached.
I believe that it's less wear and tear on the system to have it run for longer cycles than to be going on and off frequently.
I have the cycle time on my thermostat set for as long as possible but it still goes on/off too often in my opinion.
I would REALLY like it if the thermostat let me set an "on" point and "off" point (ie. A/C on at 75f and off at 72f) for longer run times.
I don't think there is any thermostat that lets one do that though.
