How about some Dill Pickles!
1 qt vinegar
2 qts water
1/2 cup canning salt
cucumbers
whole garlic cloves
whole grape leaves
dill
Bring to a boil, vinegar, water and salt, add cucumbers and boil until they change color, into each clean jar, place 1 garlic clove and one piece of dill along with one washed grape leaf, then pack into the jars the hot cucumbers, cover with the boiling vinegar and seal. This is a Flossie Johnson recipe, one of the best cooks in North Carolina, the former wife of Nascar hall Of fame driver, car owner Junior Johnson.Of course...Aristo Craft cookware helps!!!

What to so with cucumbers?

Boy is that a loaded question! LOL What discussions that could lead to!!
I'm just saying. Thanks for the great recipe. Looks easy.

I was worried this thread would have to move to "Dirty" laundry.
Good recipe, Mom used to make sweet pickles where she soaked the cukes in lime water overnight then boiled them in the syrup.

She hasn't made any of those in 30 years or so. I think I kind of miss them.

The type of lid that Hans uses is a wide mouth lid, and is very readily available wherever canning supplies are sold. Ball brand lids are also sold here in the US.

Kerr was the first to make the lids as they are today back in 1903. Kerr, Ball and Golden Harvest jars, lids and rings are all now owned by Jarden Corp. Have plants all oer the United States. Jarden also is the owner of Sunbeam and Coleman now.

And the family that owns or did own the Ball/Kerr corporation is the family that produced the wife of the former vice president under Bush I. You can't can without putting money in their pockets; meh keyn brechen!

I still have my grandmother's pickle crocks, all different sizes. More stuff for the estate sale.

what do the grapeleaves do? we use vinegar, pickling salt, dill, garlic, and sometimes jalopenos? dont quote me on the ingredient list, what I do know is that we dont use grape leaves or boil the cucumbers first.

Grape Leaves!

Darned if I know, but I do know that cream of tartar is made from grape leaves,But Grape Leaf Pickles are made in the South fairly often, the reason I used this recipe is it was quick and easy, normally I make Bread and Butter pickles or Icicle Pickles.

The grape leaves have something in them that kills the enzymes that cause the pickles to be soft. Sothey they stay crisp with the grape leaves being aded. Isn't Mother Nature great!!

Taken of a Q&A on pickles

Q I have an old recipe that calls for adding a grape leaf to each jar of pickles. Why?
A Grape leaves contain a substance that inhibits the enzymes that make pickles soft. However, removing the blossom ends (the source of undesirable enzymes) will make the addition of grape leaves unnecessary.
