I have this gas dryer I got a few months ago at the Restore. I can't find the model # on it. It says "Whirlpool Super Capacity Imperial 6 Cycle Infinite Temp". I'm not at all sure of the age. It may not be that old at all but it had an older look to it with a little splash of chrome. I would like to find a washer to match it but it would help to know which one or at least what year it is.
Thanks in advance.

Please forgive the linty mess in the pics.

Well, I feel like an...

idiot! Thanks, DADoES, I was looking all over the BACK of the dryer, not the front. Anyhow, the model # is LG7801XSW1. I plugged those numbers into the google and all that came up were modern whirlpool dryers with different model #s. So still at a loss here.

that looks to be about a 1986-88 model......a match would be of course a direct drive version, and fortunately it would have to be an "Imperial" as well for a matched set....

Imperial was TOL for the electro mechanical versions, next step down would be a "Supreme"....

from there down, no name given, those were MOL to basic models....

check out this site, enter in both the model and serial for exact date of manufacturer.....

Hmmm...here is the result for my model and serial #.

Type: Dryer
Country: USA
Model: LG7801XSW1
Serial: M92212966
Note! This product could have been manufactured on multiple dates. Personal assistance may be needed to date the product more accurately.
According to the serial number this product may have been manufactured in Marion, OH, May of 1979 or 1989.
Based on the model number supplied, this product design may have been introduced to the marketplace in 1987 or 2006 in which case the closest date indicated by the serial number may be the actual manufacturing date for this product.

thanks, ovrphil

I was looking at that one (it's in my state) but the part where it says. "a little rusty and the sides are starting to come off" kind of turned me away. "Little rusty" is not too bad but the "sides are starting to come off" is a deal breaker for the husband, who unfortunately, does not share my appreciation for older appliances. There do seem to be a few around if I open up my search to all of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.

I'd really like to get the Imperial version if I can.

Mom11, it was manufactured 22nd week of 1989 per the serial.  1979 would be a different control console style.

S in the model number indicates 1987 model-year, so production apparently continued for a while.
G and 1 indicates gas.  Electric would be LE and 7800.
780 indicates Imperial model line.
X indicates domestic dryer.
W = white color
1 = engineering change

usually sure clue, but a bit puzzling on this one......

an Imperial washer would usually come with push buttons for the temp, most times 5

a Supreme would have only 4 water temp selections....

but interesting, the dryers 'push to start' button would usually be the same shape as the push buttons on the washer......odd how some things change about

keep us posted as to what you find.....

that one machine you checked out in Milford isn't a direct drive machine btw it's a belt drive machine. That other set you checked out is direct drive that's in Ann Arbor. It looks like the cap might be missing off the agitator and may not be a dual action agitator which would give you a better turnover with large loads but can't be sure because of the poor picture quality.

I know this is probably a stupid ?...

but what are the advantages of the belt driven vs. the direct drive? If this is covered in another thread feel free to direct me there.

I am still waiting to hear back from sellers. One contacted me and said they were listing it for a friend and would pass on my # to her. Waiting........

THanks for the help on these so far. So is it worth pursuing the matching washer? Is it a good machine? Or should I hold out for a better matched set. I've always wanted a matched set and never had one. My birthday is coming up and I'd like to find something for that. But I have to tread lightly on the vintage machine thing on account of the husband. My dream machines are either older center dial Maytags or one of those Kenmore's I grew up with that had the waterfall filling thing. I loved watching that as a kid.
