I never cease to be amazed by the marketing divisions of companies, the people who work in them must be either geniuses or people who sit around with a lot of time on their hands.
The reason I say this is because we are about to get a new soap powder called Cold Power with built-in-sunscreen designed to protect your skin (alledgedly) from u.v. rays.
I am all for skin protection but I think having it built in to your soap powder is just a little beyond belief,I also understand that you need to wash your clothes in it for about 20 times for the sunscreening agents to build up to a suitable level of protection so I dare say one would be buying plenty of this stuff to get an entire wardrobe of clothes done.
Call me old-fashioned but I just believe if one wants sunscreen, one will buy sunscreen anyway and use it.

Here in the UK we have a product called Acdo Glo-White Super Whitener (see link below) which touts similar benefits. It's basically a porous sachet containing a powder crammed with optical brighteners, that you pop into the machine along with clothes and detergent. Intended to rescue dingy whites, which IMHO is usually a sign of poor laundering and residue build-up, by adding yet ANOTHER chemical to the wash! Hence it's not really my kind of product.

A year or so ago this was reformulated to include UV protection agents, although I have no idea whether it actually works as claimed. Can't really see how skin protection and laundry are in any way related, but as you say it's all about creative marketing. Personally would feel safer using a traditional sunscreen, and plenty of it.

Does make you wonder what they will come up with next though, doesn't it?!

I'm not sure how much it would protect one's skin...besides, once skin is covered with clothing anyways, nob much UV ratiation is getting through anyways...anybody ever seen tan lines?!?! Seems like this is a product made for a gullible market.

Now, what I *DO* think this product would be good for however is to keep dyes in clothing from fading due to sunlight!

Now, I'm all for putting on sunscreen and protecting my skin too, I'm trying to figure out why people are getting so paranoid about kids getting any amount of sunlight on them. I remember I was brought up in a day when getting a little sun was thought to be healthy for a kid. Not enough to get burned...or even get a tan, but enough to make a little vitaman D. Throughout my childhood I got a few sunburns and a bit of tan playing outside shirtless on the boat and at pools. I typically wear SPF 8 or 15 out depending on if I've already got a little bit of a tan or not. Now, I don't do it everyday, just occasionally during the summer. Today, my skin still looks very young, and I can pass as someone under 25 despite the fact I'm pushing 32.

You need a certain amount of sunshine.

A couple of years ago I had trouble with anxiety and depression. I did a course on anx and dep management. Did me a lot of good, I am fine now. One thing covered was the need for exposure to a certain amount of UV light, not enough to give you skin cancer of course but you need some. Spending too much time indoors, wearing sunglasses too much lowers the UV you absorb thru your eyes. I have stopped wearing sunglasses altogether since then. Where I live can be grey and damp for weeks on end, but I walk a couple of km every day both for exercise and to get some rays.

And needless to say, the better your rinses, the less of that UV-blocking chemical will stay in the clothes, down to approximately none.
