hey all here is a question, my partners brother wants me to go shopping with him and pick out a brand new fridge and wall oven. and since im not up on brand new appliances I wanted to ask everyone just what brand fridge and wall oven you would buy. im thinkin whirlpool or ge the fridge can be side by side or French door and the oven can be either elec or gas. what are the most simple and dependable brands for brand new?? please chime in

I wish appliance shopping was that easy!

Before you select what brands you want to have to determine things like what size you need, what features you want on the appliance and if you want gas or electric.
A lot of the answers to those questions will tell you what brand you will want.

As far as ovens go, do you want convection (Y/N?) Gas? Electric? Self Clean?
As far as refrigerators go do you want the freezer up on top, on the bottom, a french door model? Ice Maker? Through the door water/ice?

Lots of things to think about before you start looking.

Unless he's 5'2" he'll be happier with a bottom freezer to reduce wear and tear on the back.

If he goes gas for the oven, I'd want to make sure it can be lit and operated manually in the event of a power failure. I'd also go with convection and self-cleaning features to save time and energy. I'd also make sure the oven can broil. I'd want a light inside, too.

Those'd be my big criteria. From the choices that satisfy all those, I'd pick the one with the least computerized/electronic frou-frou.

My two cents...

well since the kitchen is being rebuilt the oven can be either gas or elec
something simple not to over the top and prob a French door fridge. I just want opinion from experience as to what brands seem to be better than others. I have always had good luck with pool products but its been so long since I have bought anything new haha that im not sure these days.

My vote for the wall oven would be an Electric self-cleaning GE. I believe that they have always been on top when it comes to cooking appliances

As for the fridge I'd say Whirlpool made stuff or GE. I bought a GE bottom freezer a year ago and I love it, I went for the Artistry fridge with the vintage look. I also like that it was one of very few bottom freezer models that didn't come with a water dispenser or ice maker. I'd of got a KitchenAid bottom freezer but they didn't have one to fit in the 30"-32" space I had[this post was last edited: 11/23/2014-18:52]

I second the GE choice for the refrigerator. Our last one was a Whirlpool that was a lemon. In the 10 years we had it we paid for it a second time in repair bills. Almost every year we had it something went wrong. We now have a two year old GE that hasn't had any issues at all.

My ten-years-old GE has had the motherboard and freezer evaporator fan replaced, ice maker water valve went to seeping and caused an iceberg that took a couple hours to clear with methodical melting with a hair dryer and progressive chiseling and disassembly of the dispenser and ice maker. The ice dispenser chute flapper and solenoid mechanism rusted and eventually jammed after a period of non-use, required replacement.

And if your GE had the freezer door rust through it would have been the same as our Whirlpool. ANY brand can have lemons. You should know that. We just decided not to press out luck with another Whirlpool. Besides, the GE had the features we wanted at the price we wanted to pay.

Yes, I fully expect the black painted freezer door is rusting through behind the stainless steel overlay panel due to the condensation moisture from the dispenser housing seeping into the insulation and down behind the stainless steel panel.
