What year is this K-Aid dishwasher ?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

This is an older Hobart built machine!   It looks like it could be a (KDS?) 17 or 18, but don't quote me on this.

It's hard to nail down the exact years on these, I have a top loading (Hobart) Kitchenaid KDA-5 portable and the closest I can get is it's between 39 and 47 years old.

I have heard nothing but great things about the KDS-18s but I have never used one.I just dont think having one wash arm would

work for me.Well scratch that I know it would not because, I Bob-load my dishwasher all the time and I do not scrape, rinse,or

anything really if it does not fall off the plate into the sink it goes in the dishwasher.I did find a video of a 1993 Kitchenaid

dishwasher that I think has the Power-clean wash system.I was shocked at the power it has way more power than I thought.

Here is the link on you tube.

As mentioned above, the built-in is definitely a KDS-16. It's hard to tell from the photo if it's the earlier non-soak cycle version or the later soak cycle version. The later version added the word "soak" under the second button. It used a different timer and selector switch than the earlier one but everything else was the same.

These machines were made from May of 1968 to May of 1971. I don't have the exact date for the introduction of the soak cycle on this machine but suspect it was sometime in 1969.

The KD-15, 16 & 17 all shared basically the same washing system with only one 4-arm hydro-sweep wash arm on the bottom. The upper arm rack was introduced on the KD18 series in Nov. of 1976.

Superba et.al.

The pictured built-in is a 16 series but as was mentioned, it can't be determined if it had the "soak" Cycle. The Top Loader is a "5" series machine, based on the KD-15 dishwashers. The coarse strainer is the give away in that one.

Soak cycle:

On the KDS-16 this meant that the machine with fill with water and wash (for a total of 3.6 minutes elapsed time including the fill). It would then shut off the motor and let the dishes "soak" in this detergent solution for 12 minutes before resuming the cycle.

Re single wash arm...

Dont let a single wash arm scare you away from these, they will outwash anything made today by a long shot....and do it in less than an hour!
