A PHILCO range!!!!, I couldn't resist for 75.00, Went to Mooresville today and got this 2 ton thing!!! Under the dirt its in really nice shape....It has the meat probe, Color Lit controls,Broil Under Glass, it had the book and broiler pan also, .....It has something I never saw before,a funny porthole with a swinging cover, between the right front and right rear unit, I think it could be the oddball smoke eater attachment port..Has anyone ever seen such a thing????

You are going to wear out two pairs of rubber gloves cleaning that range and yes, that little hole near the 8" element was for the smoke eater.

Broil under glass did nothing but create a very hard to clean surface that would not otherwise exist, but if the glass is not kept clean, broiling performance suffers. Since you don't broil, it should not be a problem for you.

I would think the book that came with it should cover operation of the smoke eater thingamajig.  I'm curious to hear more about how it (supposedly) worked.

Yeah....

Its my fat self!LOL, Im relly going to do some heavy cleaning, the first owners broiled everything, but oven cleaner and Brillo pads will get the carbon off...But it really is in nice shape overall, and HEAVY!! great day, maybe im just getting older, but some of these old stoves are brutally heavy, about twice or more heavy than than a new range.

Philco's Smoke and Odor Eater

Was a cover that could be lowered over a pan or skillet that had a electric heater and a catalytic converter in it to burn away smoke and odors from cooking. I have only seen pictures of them, in theory it might actually work, something to keep an eye out for at yard sales Hans.
