THREE for sure!!! Thanks to Swestoyz I finally got the hard-to-find part I needed for my GE. Now I have all three wash speeds and both spin speeds.

I learned alot about how this clutch works as and hopefully more from Ben. It's quite a unique design to say the least and it actually works quite well.

I made a really brief video of all three wash speeds for everyone to take a look at. Enjoy!

Ooo, this is good news Jon! Glad to hear the parts worked out A-OK (besides those pesky boots). I was thinking on the way to work this morning how the set-up works. With both solenoids off - full speed. One engaged is med, and both is slow?

The video is great as well. LOVE the agitation on the med speed - turns a GE into a Maytag!

Thanks for the vid - I love the medium speed as well, it makes that wicked Activator seem almost harmless. We had that Activator in a near-BOL washer growing up - it could really make some suds if you weren't careful. Do you know what the strokes per minute are at each speed?

Here's kinda what I know...

I wasn't able to take any photos but Ben did a while back that were very helpful. Basically there is the clutch as a whole with a couple of little tabs on the sides. There are also two solenoids located at the side near the clutch with "fingers". What I'm guessing is that the tabs on the on clutch hold the clutch shoes in for maximum contact with the clutch shoes thus spinning at a greater speed. When a solenoid is activated the finger moves in just close enough to knock one of the tabs sideways causing the clutch shoes to "slip" outward with centrifugal force. When both "fingers" are activated the both sets slip outward. I'm assuming that as the shoes slip out that's less contact with the clutch shoes causing more "slipping" and a slow speed.

The tabs are spring-loaded so when the clutch stops spinning everything pops back into place with a "click, click" sound. Please correct me if I'm wrong but this is all assumption. I did not take the clutch apart because "if it ain't broke don't fix it". It works quietly so I'm not going to mess with it yet.

The idea behind GE's clutch designs was indeed for filtering reasons. Notice the filter-flo waterfall is going at full-speed on all wash speeds. I washed a couple of seat cover loaded with cat hair last night on gentle and the amount of hair that was in the filter pan was amazing. And it was with the mini-basket!

It really was a great design. By the way Ben, the rubber tips that were worn away were easily replaced with some $1.99 rubber valve caps I found at the auto store across the street. Worked like a charm.

Thanks again Ben. You really made my year because this is a special machine to me and I'm so proud that it's working as it was meant to.

SHOW THE 3 SPEED CLUTCH IN A MIN-BASKET LOAD

C'mon, you're all hooked up and video-ing fabulously.

Thought about you for quite a while today. My GE is permanently hooked for mini-basket loads, but I had some winter fleeces to wash and i loaded up, forgetting about the 4 vane agi which accepts the basket. So I'm watching the 4 vane struggling and I'm like, what the hell is the problem here. then I realized that the spiral agitator was sitting smiling beside the washer.

NOW HERE IS WHY I WISH YOU WERE HERE WITH YOUR CAMERA:

The tub is 3/4's full of water and fleece and i realize that the 4 vane just won't do, and I must get it out of there. So i yank it up-- the fleece clothes and water slow-motion sloshing and resisting.

But now I must plop down the 3 vane spiral. What a workout. Bench-pressing it down, then dead-lift pilling the parts of the clothes stuck under the last half inch, It was wonderful.

AND THEN: the extreme agility of the 3 vane spiral, gently yanking them down thoroughly and effortlessly. What amazes me about 3 vane spirals is how well they work with large loads at lower water levels; it's like lily pods, floating well above but sinking oh so gently and easily.

Sheer GE ecstasy.

What a wonderful Thanksgiving present from the incalculably generous Ben.

I noticed that on Slow the tub indexs (much like a modern Frigidaire TL) just a little, but does not on Medium or Regular. Neat design!

The tub will index for a short time initially and then it eventually will lock. By the time I made the medium and normal videos the tub had locked itself in place.

speed question

On a two speed GE do you get the slowest speed pictured here on slow and the fastest speed pictured here on high? The reason i ask is the fast speed seems really fast! I would think the medium speed would be most appropriate for most loads.

Yup you either got the slow of the fast. Medium was a short-lived speed. Was only around for a couple of years right? And of course there was the Versatronic model that was a variable speed. The day I find one of those in working condition...just might mess myself!
