And manufacturers "having control" through WIFI can also control possible hidden features to make the damn thing break down, forcing consumers to purchase another appliance, keep that cash flow going.
I might be speculating, but the way corporate America seems to be these days, greedy, I wouldn't put it past them.
And why "track users"? - As for me, I like my privacy, something else the internet isn't known for.

When they started to bring out those refrigerators with touch screens, automatic food sensors that could add things to your shopping list..... I knew trouble was ahead.

I don't need stupid wifi. Why do I need the fridge to do my shopping list when I can do it myself? Too many stupid idiots are just lazy as heck.

I'm aware of internal corporate doings, the challenges, and the human bias factors.
But face it, the products of yesteryear were built, designed, with quality and reliability.
That's all the consumer cares about.

And they did the job well for years, even in the most extremely abusive conditions. Today's appliances DON'T even hold a candle to any of them.

The orbital was introduced with the 12 series if my memory serves me. Around 1986.

I remember how the orbitals sounded when they agitated. I believe you could hear the transmission whirring as it was happening.

The Maytag orbital was a heavy robust transmission looking similar to a Whirlpool belt drive mounted on the bottom of the tub. It's successor had only 5 moving parts, with a tapered tube ascending from the bottom mounting to a sort of automobile differential shaped gearcase.

Then how come the orbital has such a short stroke?
Seems to me that would hinder turnover due to lack of agitation.
