I agree.. If they had a continuous 360 degree (If that was possible) waterfall happening during the entire duration of the wash and rinse cycles (Kind of like the Filter-Flo concept, but without the filter basket) then I think those kinds of machines (Especially modern washplate machines) would be much more effective.

They would be noisier, but they'd also sound great!

In all honesty, I've always kind of had a bit of a fascination with this style of machine.. Not with the modern washplate which spins, but rather the nub in the middle which moves around.

There must have been a reason why they didn't make these washers for very long..

@yogitunes; haha no doubt this is a fantastic machine, people just did not use it correctly I guess! Would it be possible to upload those instructionvideo's maybe on a sort of private youtube/whatever account! Seems that we still could learn a lot more.

@qualin; I was also fascinated with the machine back in those days, then I discovered this website... if it was possible I would have shipped a Calypso overhere! I was also extremely disappointed that there was no continous flow of water in the Cabrio/Bravos/... Someons who wants to update their HE washer with an extra pump?

I used a Calypso years back....when they first came out (about 1998/99). I was working for the catering department in a nursing home. We washed and ironed all of the linens, towels, etc. That washer can take a full load and wash it well. We were doing up to 20 loads a day in that beast. Because of it being new, EcoLab did not have the proper detergent for it, and it constantly needed repairs due to over sudsing, and lint build up. Other than being repaired about every 5-6 months, it cleaned very well, and held quite a bit of laundry compared to other TL washers at that time. It lasted about 5 years, until they went back to a standard Whirlpool TL, since no one wanted to jump on the FL wagon yet. I used to get fussed at for messing with the lid switch, so I could watch it operate through the cycles.

Why they discontinued the Calypso

There are many reasons, they are were very expensive to build and very complicated. They were marketed badly by Sears and WP alike as they only had one model in under name plate. The Calypso project started almost 20 years before this machine appeared on the market and by the time it was introduced it was never going to be competitive to build cost wise. So like early Combination washer- dryers they did not spend more money on this machine further improving and perfecting it.

 

But all in all it was a very good attempt at building an efficient, effective TL washer. And it is a good modern classic that I always intend to keep in my laundry arsenal.

Was at Martin's again!

I can attest that you can put a lot of clothes in it at once. I had put 4 bath towels and 5 denim jeans in, and it handled them with ease! The load does compress down considerably after saturated, but still turns over as in a regular top loading machine, and counter-clockwise at the same time. I have a video which I will upload and post here so everyone can see.

I must admit I was very skeptical, and if it was'nt for seeing Martin's and testing it myself, there would have never been an HE machine in my basement. It appears to be a reliable machine, and if treated well, will last a long time. With that said, I am still going to stock spare parts just in case, and probably should for all my machines.

Brian that is a fun machine and you will have a great time with it and lower your energy cost.

You are now the owner of the first attempted HE top loader.

The funny thing is that the Apex washer I think was very simular so it's not a new concept in wobble washing.

And if they modified the Apex I think it could be a HE washer today.

Brian I have a spare lid The Dome of silence which Whirlpool called it...lol

I guess you can create even a nicer one then I have.

In spite of the downfalls of this machine, it does have the best handwash program it just spins an spray with little nutation.

Which it hardly moves the clothes off the plate.

Demo window......for now its just that.....fully open........no plexiglas yet.....if you take notice, it just snaps in place and held there by the door lock feature....permanent door still in place....but lets you see the function better than using the metal hanger and holding the button in...

its actually a door I ruined by washing car mats, the inside plastic was broke on the inside...but having one with a better interior, you could cut it carefully to prep it for a plexiglas insert, with caulking and trim, keeping an eye on jagged edges......I used a GE FF activator for the shape of the outter doors perfect circle.....this is no different than adding a sunroof to an automobile....the only thing to consider is the gap in between, and what to fill it with if you wanted to use this permanently.....but more ideas suggest a coil of rope light inside for lighted viewing......car door edge guard will trim the outter edges, and seal a piece of plexi to that from the inside.....

but would be interesting to have the washer and dryer match with lighted window doors....you do realize I would have to do this 4 times, for one house!...this may take a while....lol

I have a extra lid for the Calypso washer if your interested ok.

The washer does have some issues which I ask Daddos how to fix a while ago.
