Which FL do I buy???

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

IMHO, there's no reasonable excuse for FL washer manufacturers not to enable the door swing to be reversed. Might add a buck or two to the mfg cost, but so what? Most of the damn things already cost $1,000 or more. So far I've only seen honest attempts to do that from Electrolux and GE. In some cases I figure some drilling and tapping might enable others to do a door swing reversal.

SQ Front Load Washers

Come with a choice of right or left door swing at no cost difference.

The LG FL washers work pretty well, but if you expect see if your local appliance company wants to work on them when you have problems, many companies will not.

I would never get an LG or Samsung dryer, they a cheap thin pieces of crap, at least get a WP-MT or SQ dryer.

Pictures of a 2012 SS dryer that we replaced with a SQ stack pair last week, the drum material is so thin and cheapie just breaks apart destroying your clothing and dryer in the process, The models with SS drums are even thinner and more prone to cracking. LOL

PS the drum in this dryer was already replaced once under warranty for cracking, this was supposed to be the improved drum.

Samsung and LG

They are different companies and Samsung is NOT known to make quality, long-lasting appliances. Samsung should stick to TVs and phones.

LG washers and dryers are high quality, reliable appliances. I agree Speed Queen makes excellent, reliable washers and dryers, but at a much higher price.

Just to say, sister's DV330AEW (serial 2011-02) hasn't thrown a broken drum, although I have advised her it can happen.

She didn't directly buy the set.  They were given to her by friends who destroyed the washer with bad habits.  I repaired it for $256 parts in Feb 2016.  Nothing was wrong with the dryer at the time.  The dryer has since needed replacement of the thermistor and thermal fuse on the blower housing.

The new GE

What’s your experience with the new GE front loaders and dryers?

Has anyone thought about buying them?
Are those better than the Whirlpool Maytag counterparts?

With appearance I’m kinda turned off by the questionable quality of the plastic door of the Maytag and whirlpool.

I owned the Whirlpool WFW6620 and would whole heartedly recommend them. Unfortunately I will be moving and can't take them with me. Otherwise I would still have them. The plastic door is fine after nearly 1 year in use.

Don't let the plastic door dissuade you. They are great washers.

My brother has 2 Samsung FL washer and dryer pairs. They have a LARGE household-3 families living there. Its something when I come to visit. Its intereting to me since I live alone. The SS wahers and dryers ran ALL THE TIME!!!If those die-will suggest to them to get SQ sets. There is a dealer in Rapid City,SD.

LG easy to work on.

I am in the middle of a full strip down of two older LG front loaders to make one good machine from the two.
I am once again very impressed with how easy they are to dismantle. These are about 20 years old and the Frankenstein washer I make out of bits of the two will have years of life left in it. Everything comes apart without grief, many parts like soap dispenser and front display panel can be left attached and dangled down the sides of the machine, giving clear access to remove the whole drum assembly from the front. A drum spider is still available and reasonably priced.

I have fully dismantled the first machine, right down to removing the inner drum, broken spider and noisy bearings. No swearing was required and no blood was shed.

At the price I doubt you could beat the LG.

I have recently scrounged and repaired a 10 year old Miele and it is in a whole different league, but that is reflected in the price when new. The Miele now lives in our house.

When a dumpster has a Miele and an LG in it and both appear in similar good condition, I'll save the Miele, but I still am impressed with the LGs.

UPDATE!

So, I was about to buy the LG 3900 from Costco. Then, my friend started complaining about all the issues she’s had with her LG (not 3900, but similar model from 2018). I got scared, called my local appliance repair/used appliance store, and bought this old thing for $695. I think I overpaid, but I’m exhausted. 90 day warranty. Running my first load right now!

Not a choice I'd have made, but that's neither here nor there. Had a Frigidaire-branded (made by Electrolux) top-loader with an indexing tub (as does yours) and it was OK. The indexing tub (it makes a partial turn with each stroke clockwise stroke of the agitator) hinders rollover on maximum capacity loads, but should be fine as long as you don't overload it.

Also had a similar Frigidaire dryer. The drum is rather small for the size of load the washer can handle. I usually divided a big load of shirts/pants into two dryer loads to minimize wrinkling. It's not an issue with bath towels and things like that.

Age: My Frigidaire top-loader was a 2005 model and it had the newer-style dual action agitator with a softener dispenser at the top. Yours has the older-style straight vane agitator, but they may have continued using that one in the stacked units. Anyone around here know when Kenmore used that particular logo?

EDIT UPDATE: Posted a video of the Frigidaire-branded version of your stack.

At any rate, glad you have a working washer and dryer. Hope you get your $695 (and more!) out of it.

Amy- I’m a longtime Tide fan. If it’s helpful, here are the top-rated detergents from a leading testing organization. Tide makes some detergents specifically formulated for HE washers, others that are recommended for use in either traditional or HE machines.

I really liked Persil Proclean + Stain Fighter, as well, but my local grocery store no longer carries it. For the sake of comparison, Tide Ultra Stain Release, made specifically for HE washers, and the aforementioned Persil—for any type of washer—are the top-scorers, with an overall score of 84.

Tide Ultra Oxi- overall score of 83, so virtually identical in cleaning power/stain removal to the two top-rated detergents.

Tide Heavy Duty 10X- score of 80. I’m using this at the moment, and have to say it’s not worth the extra 10-cent per load cost. Cleans well, though; just expensive. I’m going to try Tide Ultra Oxi. It is sometimes available at the local grocery store, so I’ll have to grab a jug when I see it.

Tide Original- score of 70. Did not remove several stains as well as the Ultra Oxi and Heavy Duty 10X versions.

Front-loaders had been my “daily driver” since the mid 1980s, but in 2017 I purchased a Speed Queen 9-series top-loader pair upon moving to an apartment building with a cramped, communal laundry area that has a wooden floor. I was concerned the high spin speed of a front-loader would cause a lot of noise and vibration, annoying the other three apartments. Turns out the floor is robust enough to handle front-loaders, but I’ve grown to like the Speed Queen, so probably won’t bother spending the money to return to my preferred format.
