Which model gets clothes the cleanest?

Hi there, quick question -

Of every make and model of automatic washer ever made for the USA market, which one gets the clothes the cleanest? Now that we have government-mandated water-saving and hot-water temperature limiters and all that, modern washers just don't seem to do the trick for me like the older models did.

I don't care how much water it uses, I just want the one that gets the clothes the cleanest, and gets all the soap out.

I think the older belt drive Kenmores did a fantastic job, as long as you dont overload them and dont go wild with the detergent, they wash well and rinse very well.

I second that, plus!

A Norge will outclean about anything,but also will wear out your clothes because it is so agressive,as for new stuff, Speed Queen,no contest!

Frigidaire!

I vote GM frigidaire. The clothes moved through the water rather quickly and the up and down action was more gentle than a standard adj.Weather it was a rapid dry or 1/18 you can always rely on a clean wash!

Of all the machines I've experienced ( I've never used a Blackstone, Hamilton, Kelvinator or Philco) the vintage Norge wins hands down. The vintage Frigidaire Unimatic and Rapid Dry Rollermatics extract the most water. Robert, does the GE AW-6 extract as well or better than the Frigidaires?

They all do. It is up to the user to use it correctly.

But I vote Speed Queen. The smaller, solid tub, the no-nonsense agitation and the overflow rinses do it for me.

I really liked the old Easy machines with the spiralator action. I wish that I could get one of these again. I also liked the solid-tub Fridgidare machines as well. I guess that I'm a solid tub junkie.

If we are talking about earlier machines...

Robert, does the GE AW-6 extract as well or better than the Frigidaires?
Yes the GE AW6 extracts more water because it has a nine minute final spin as opposed to the 3 and 4 minute final spins.

Personally I would not rate Frigidaire as getting the cleanest clothes as it was more gentle. It does a good job, but not the best. Norge and Whirlpool family of machines should most likely take that title but with the cleaning ability comes aggressiveness which makes clothes wear slightly faster. Where Frigidaire excelled was in its rinsing and water extraction ability.

As said above really any washer used properly will get clothes clean, you just have to learn how to properly use each machine and with each machine comes a different way to properly use it.

I prefer the rinsing capabilities of the solid-tub machines, my '63 WCI has a VERY long over-flow rinse---it must change all the water in the tub at least once, having said that, a Surgilator equipped Whirly BD is an aggressive beast that dirt can't hide from. I also like my '64 Maytag Highlander which has proven over and over again that it can clean even the dirtiest of gardening clothes including good old red Georgia clay.

....the clunking and banging Norges, Magic Chefs, Admirals, Wards family didn't seem to last very long, but they did clean VERY well.

I agree with Robert about the GM Frigidaires; quite good washing, but not the cleanest. Our old Rollermatic was outdone by the Kenmore Super Roto-Swirl, and the short-lived Monkey Norge.
