Constellation :)

Hey Jason

It was indeed known as the Hoover Constellation the 1st time round :-). The 858 was the only non UK made version we had!. Our 1st model was the 822(Same as your 82- non floaty ). By the time this one came along the UK version was the 867A and in April 70 was white with a Jade Green base. Our last model to have Hoover Constellation around the hose inlet was the Swedish Green/smoke Pine 867A which ended in 69.
I believe the Connie lasted much longer over here than it did your side of the pond! .Our final version was the white with yellow base which ran from approx 77 to 83!!!. The very last models had a white rocker switch and beige/taupe cable with plastic beige twist fit tools. The 867A model number stayed the same on every version from about 64-83- confusing or what!!!!

The rating plate .....

In case anyone was wondering the square within a square shows that it complies with the British Standard for double insulation, and therefore no earth(ground) is necessary!

As a comparison......

This is the 1st incarnation of the 867A from 65ish.One of the main differences on the UK models as you can see was the position and design of the cord entry point- all UK made models were like this :).

One more

This was before the "New" type serial numbers

P.s The correct name for these colours are Hop Green and Jonquil!

VERY COOL!

Seamus...I really like the red model. Ours was a pumpkin orange with the same color base. You even have the "American tools" save the dusting brush. Ours had the telescoping wand instead of two wands.

The UK models had a better cord entrance to the base. The US version of the cord often goes bad at this spot. I cannot believe you had the Connie that long. The green version is also very beautiful. I just love this design, and I am so glad that it is back. I just wish the new one came in this great green color like your vintage machine.

Thanks for the pics! You have an amazing collection.

Hey Tom

The top is actually orange- it looks redder in the pic!

The cord on this one does indeed need a rewire as the outer sheath is split nearly all the way round with the inner cores exposed- defiantly looks like a weak point!.

I would say the Hose and rug/floor tool are the only US accesories. The hose is def correct as it has a US patent number and Ultraflex embossed on the machine end(this design of hose was known as Hooverflex over here). The floor tool is also def a US one because of the floor and rug/shag markings. ours never has any markings to say what the levers did lol!!. The reason I would presume the rods and small tools are all UK versions as they are all embossed Hoover- I presume US ones wouldnt have been???.

Thanks for the compliment on the collection- Think I still have a long way to go to match yours tho lol!!!!

Cheers

embossed Hoover

Seamus,
That looks like a later 858, post 1973 anyway to me. The small tools and such would not have said Hoover on them because of JC Penney. At that point Hoover was still making private label cleaners for Penney's.
Those are beautiful Connies!

The date!!

Hey Jeff

This was a bit of a suprise- I always presumed the 858 came over at the same time as the U4003 in 73 when the factory went on strike. The serial number defiantly dates it to April 70 tho, it breaks down as

858- model. 0 year 1970 04 month April.
Strange !!!!!

"By appointment of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, suppliers of vacuum cleaners..."

Does this specifically mean that Hoovers are used in the various Royal households and offices, or something else?

Hoover ad: Picture, HM the Queen, with Hoover. Headline, "By Royal Appointment." Caption: "When we host formal dinners for visiting heads of state, the staff can get awfully busy with all the details. Sometimes there isn't enough time to get all of it done. That's alright, I don't mind pitching in to help. Fortunately we have Hoovers. They do an excellent job keeping our carpets and floors spotless. That's why we've appointed Hoover as our official supplier of vacuum cleaners."

By Appointment

Basically yes- at one point Buck House(Buckingham Palace lol) was kept clean with Hoovers. Every Hoover was allowed to carry the coat of Arms etc(not all did tho) until a couple of years ago when production went to China. Now some are by Appointment to the Queen Mother (Presumably the fact shes dead meant she cant object!!!).

Seamus

P.s If you come across any Sovereign or Innovation Hoovers these may well carry the Coat of arms(They were UK made and known over here as the Turbopower and Turbomaster)

Hoover constellion model 84

I have a model 84 that I was told was rare because of the color of it, It's pearl white with the pink bumper and the bottom base is silver, I have to admit I have never seen another one like it, I have tries several times to post a pic of it but it won't go thru. But if anyone would like to see it I can send the pic of it thru kodak
