This has puzzled me for years, I've tried searching on this forum too with no success.

On DD machines, there is a timer detent just before it neutral drains on the wash cycle. All machines highlight it on the timer. If you put the timer in this mode and turn the machine on with the lid switch engaged, the machine will agitate regardless of water level. And you can trick the machine in to doing a suds return.

What is the point of this?

on some models that was a step-down mark for slower agitation speeds....or also where it would no longer operate with the lid open after that point in the cycle...

I think I have a 1-18 that stops at the 5 minute mark, and will continue once the lid is closed...

sometimes this has been helpful for a wash...pause for a soak with the lid left open....and then close for additional agitation, and then complete the rest of the cycle...

I was right.....it will fill and agitate with the lid open...up to the 5 minute mark, then it stops, and you have to close the lid to resume.....

not sure about all cycles, but this was the Regular Cycle I used.....

DD Dry agitate..

That mark the dial is for dry agitation, for troubleshooting, bypasses water level switch, and lid switch. Handy is you want to fill only 1/4 of the way for a quick wash. All DD and BD wp/km machines have this, not necessarily marked on the dial, but if you advance the timer incrementally you can find it

Do other brands have this, like GE or Maytag? And what about BD machines?

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Frigidaire 1-18 lid switch

The first of these models had a lid switch that would not allow ANYTHING to operate with the lid open. Later on, toward the end of the 70's they allowed it to fill and wash until it was close to spin and then stop if the lid was still open. The whole idea was SAFETY.
