Whirlpool Direct Drive Agitator

My 1980 Whirlpool went out and I got a 2001 Whirlpool Direct drive..I have went through two dog clutches on the agitator.

I don't over load it but, they keep failing on me.I can only use the washer on large water setting now. If I fill it on super size the clothes just sit there.

I have always hated those spiral agitators for some reason.To me they are very boring,I know a lot you guys love them but, we

all like what we like.

I spent 100 bucks on this washer because it was one of those months were everything breaks and everybody is wanting money or out right stealing money from you (Never give Verizon your Credit Card)

I also am one of those who HATES credit cards and the bill.I did not want to spend 800 bucks on a new washer at the moment.

 

 The agitator just sits there but, the bottom works.I was wondering if anybody here has put a different type on these or if they would even fit?

I thought about, taking my Heat gun and cutting and bending that spiral and then just load that center with J.B. Weld and be done with it..

All I can say is you must REALLY overload your washer if the agitate dogs keep going out and if the clothes just sit there on the high water level.

is it possible that the auger is worn, not just the dogs....a lot of repair kits offer the auger with new dogs....

and there are other straight vane versions that would fit/work, but you may come across the same issue of turnover with the largest water level....

I prefer the ones with bigger vanes on the barrel.....

FSP has a agitator overhaul kit for about $12.00. I put one in our WP DD Dual Action agitator some years ago. It contains new dogs, new bearings and is a snap to install. Maybe 20 minutes. The agitator works like new. The upper part of the agitator pulls the clothes under the water and the fins on the bottom move the water and clothes around.

Slipping Auger On A Dual Action Agitator

Hi is it possible that water is getting into the area where the agitator dogs are? the cap that protects this area from water and fabric softener may have a bad rubber seal or not be installed properly.

 

Other that this the teeth inside the auger may be too worn for good engagement.

 

Is this washer a very high mileage machine? I don't think I have ever put more than one set of agitator dogs on a washer. If the dogs are not engaging well but still in one piece try installing them upside down, they will engage better but will make a slight rasping noise as they work.

I figured we get about 15 years of use out of a set of dogs on our washer. We are on our second set and the machine is 24 years old. Even nylon wears after awhile!

For best washing, you will want:

An Xtra Roll Action Plus agitator. You can get one at most appliance stores and it will fit your machine.

but yeah, the auger with the tilted vanes was a great improvement....

if I am correct, these were exclusive to the Kenmore machines only.....but fit all direct drive machines.....

just be careful if ordering individual parts, there were so many different bases matched to different augers....if your not sure, best to order a complete unit...
