If the oils smell similar, then they most likely are from the same oil company that produced the oil for Whirlpool and GE transmissions. My guess is GE probably requested the oil company that produced the oil to add certain detergents and additives since GE transmissions didn’t last as long compared Whirlpool’s direct drive transmission and I am sure Whirlpool just used the same oil they used in their belt drive transmissions since both are 60 weight oil and was just cheaper to use something that was in your parts bin rather than having R&D just to develop a new oil for the direct drive transmissions.

compared to the new style GE

I've heard that whirlpool's oil is a lot heavier than GE's new style gear oil. It makes me wonder why GE used a lot lighter oil than the whirlpool DD and GE FF used in their transmissions.
Why couldn't GE use the same oil but in less quantities? They could've used the similar oil viscosity and gearing to compete with whirlpool DD in longevity and performance.

whirlpool direct drive washer gears

I've heard that the whirlpool direct drive gears are made of a heavy steel. Is this true? It makes me wonder, knowing that the transmission has to go through all of that torque the motor puts out. Could this be how maytag got the mct label years later?
If so, that may explain why they hold up so well.
