Whirlpool Gold Catalyst Direct Drive

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I’m not sure, but it definitely would’ve been a top of the line machine back in the early 2000s when they were produced. They definitely put a lot of time and effort into these machines, and I have the original users guide, as well as the original VHS tape that came with the Kenmore catalyst machine that was essentially a visual users guide for it.

Backup control panel

I was able to find a new old stock control panel for this machine which I will keep just in case the current one fails. From the looks of it, this doesn't look difficult to replace. The tech sheet only has 4 steps to install it.

Also is this "pause" sound normal? Probably not. Seems to only happen on low spin. I'm not sure if this is normal behavior for this machine.

That's a motor speed change from ex low to low for stepped final spin on Perm Press.

Pressing the Spin On/(Off) button (at the end of the Washing Status timeline) after selecting a cycle adds 6 mins more final spin time to any cycle.

Interesting. I didn’t know it was suppose to shift from an extra low spin to just low. I thought it was just low/high spin. Does it do that on any other cycle?

Amazing washer

This machine is working perfectly. I really don't think it was used hardly at all. It's so smooth. I'm getting people on my YouTube channel asking where they can find one. The catalyst option really works well and the clothes smell extra fresh when they come out. Was this just available on this machine and the Kenmore variant?

Congrats on the washer. I love these machines I think they are beautiful. There was a Kenmore version, personally I think Whirlpools version was much more stylish than the kenmore version. The Kenmore had the triple action agitator, I’m not sure if there were other step up features.

Kenmore version

I have the Kenmore triple action agitator I could stick in it just for fun. From the looks of it, the Kenmore version had a delay start option, that's pretty much it from what I could tell. I don't think the Kenmore version had the extended spin. I could be wrong.

I'm filming a medium load of towels right now for my youtube channel. I just can't get enough of this machine. I wish it would still available so others could enjoy it.

Glad you’re enjoying this wonderful machine

There are many incredible machines out there. Most of them made within the last 30 years, have you had a calypso met or the resource saver? The fun dryer I have now is the easy clean 100.

It’s all so all kinds of fun vintage machines I just finished my 1971 lady Kenmore gas combo, what a piece of engineering that works so well.

This is why I’ve never tired of working with appliances every day there’s all kinds of places, homes people and the appliances themselves are often very interesting.

Enjoy John

Calypso

Looks like a great machine, but I never see any pop up. I don’t know if these weren’t made long but I have heard good things.

I’ll be enjoying this machine for a long long time. Right now I’m on a mission to find the matching dryer.

Whirlpool built, calypso washers

They sold a lot of them and they still turn up from time to time. It was top rated for a little while and consumer reports which helped the sales even though they never really got under $1000 in price.

It’s an incredible piece of machinery. Try to find a low mileage one and enjoy it. I’ve kept a couple in reserve ( and a lot of spare parts ). because I intend to have one for the rest of my life.

Matt,

Calypso is the granddaddy of HE toploaders.  I don't think you'd like the washing method, it's completely contrary to your philosophy of "adjust the pressure switch for more water."  Clothes are bounced on an oscillating plate while showered by a recirculation stream.  They're never submerged/floating in a tub of water, the fill level is below the wash plate.

Stuck agitator auger

Anyone have any luck on how to remove the upper portion of the agitator. I’m trying to change the dogs out remove the agitator put it on the floor applied pressure with my feet to pull the upper auger off but unfortunately it will not budge, no matter what. I don’t want to get too aggressive and damage the agitator. [this post was last edited: 5/16/2024-18:54]

The dogs appear functional per your videos, no need to change them without cause.  It's an easy task that can be done if/when later become necessary evidenced by lack of auger function.

The auger is attached via a couple anchor latch-tabs that facilitate factory assembly.  May take some effort to "break" it loose.  Again, no need to do that unnecessarily.

Ok. So the only way to remove the auger is simply hold the base down with my feet and pull up on the auger? I read the tabs needed to be broken or something? I just want to know ahead of when they break.

I am not going to remove anything from this machine until I need to. Only thing I did was replace the detergent dispenser and adjust water level to fill higher. I’m not familiar with the Whirlpool agitators, as I only have used Kenmore. I will not replace the dogs, but was just wondering if there was an easier way to remove the auger when the time comes. I damn near killed myself yesterday trying to remove it. My intention was to clean the inside.
