I have a whirlpool that is having trouble spinning. I would say that 65% of the time it will spin on its own, and the other times, you have to give it a nudge to spin. Agitate cycle works fine. Belt looks good, has about a 3/4 of an inch play. The clutch adjustment plate or whatever its called is basically loose when in spin cycle. Im pretty lost where to go from here. Any insight and help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Eric

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by that, but the clutch should not be loose during the spin cycle. It should be tight against the spin pulley.

The part I think you're talking about is called a 'brake yoke'. It is part of the basket drive & brake assembly and is always loose and moveable when uninstalled. It is secured in place by two supports, one which is stationery on the side closest to the service panel area (where you're probably viewing it from), and on the opposite side by a movable support that rides up and down with a shift from brake to spin.
Check both sides of your brake yoke. The stationary side should be secured by either a plastic clip or a spring with cotter pin. The plastic clip snaps through a hole in the yoke onto the support which is part of the transmission cover. The spring is compressed and held down by a cotter pin which has the same effect as the newer design clip.
The other side of the yoke should have a large spring attached to it that attaches to the transmission below. The combination of the large spring on one side and the clip/small spring on the other serve to hold-down the brake yoke. Any of these items can wear or break and cause the yoke to be too loose, which will effect the spin function of the machine a great deal.
Just this past weekend I reassembled a machine and inadvertently allowed the moveable spin support to come out of its mount on the yoke, but it didn't move enough for me to notice. The machine barely spun at all until I noticed the flaw and corrected it. It worked properly after that.
The good news is that the big spring and the plastic clip I know are still available from Whirlpool or Sears. It may be that the older spring and cotter pin are as well. If not, someone here probably has some.
