Hello everyone!

My friends Whirlpool AWM328 washer is acting up. Halfway through the main wash, it stops and your have to pres the start button to get it to continue te cycle (which it does flawlessly). It stops as soon as it has clicked to advance on form the heating stage. However, it doesn't heat! The door glass is cold when the temperature dial is clearly at 40c. It is used on Prog. 1 (Cottons) with 'Quick Wash' selected. Also, towards the end of the wash, the timer starts to move erratically. Once, the timer tried to advance when the wash had finished (I think!).

What is wrong?

Thanks!

Well...

Mum's Whirlpool AWM5125/S appears to do a timed heat when quick is selected, and with a full load by the end of the wash it is barely tepid most of the time, not designed for anything more than a few items you see.

Also the timers on these machines do move erratically, they don't have mechanical timers, it's all PCB controlled I believe. Instead of going round continuously through the cycle it tends to stay in one place for ages then move about halfway round the dial in one go. The dial makes a full rotation every cycle if it's like Mum's.

Mum's sometimes goes a bit odd and continues to drain after the dial has reached the stop position and occasionally stops dead mid-rinse. A bit of fiddling and it starts up as usual so it really dosen't concearn me.

I was thinking about this after reading HooverKeymatics post last night. I think given how the machines stops after the heating phase, but the water remains cold, the fault could be as simple as the heating element.

The erratic turning of the dial could be this machines way of showing there's a fault, abit like how new machines show an error code on their displays.

Why not try changing the heating element if the part's fairly cheap?

Liam.
