Whirlpool indents
These went away in the early 1980s, I believe after the 1982 models. Purpose was to have a common cabinet with Kenmore. It simplified manufacturing and helped control costs.
There were several models, in both standard capacity and large, which had a console essentially like this washer's, with two rotary knobs. I had bought a large capacty at Circuit City for $349 in June 1986, with a standard dryer. It was an LA5580. Four levels, three or four temps, two speed. They were selling Toast color for the price of white, and white was out of stock. Washer had the winged Surgilator and yes, a manual filter. This may have been a special model for Circuit City because it had the 1983/1984 console as in this pic, but was well past the introduction of the revised 1985 panels which were used on most models by then. I think there was another large cap model beneath this one, and even a one-knob wonder. There were also several standard cap models, three levels three temps, 2 speed (LA5700) and a three level three temp single speed machine (LA5300). They all seemed to sell well. I cancelled mine and got a refund when I found the Kenmores on sale which I wanted more. Dryer was much better for the same money, washer has a self clean filter but fewer levels.
