My whirlpool washer won't drain the tub....replaced pump and realized pump wasn't issue. Removed pump fom motor shaft and jumped lid switch to test. Motor hums but shaft for pump doesn't spin....can turn with hand though. Agitator works so motor must be good. What part would affect motor shaft not spinning when agitator can spin? Thanks for any suggestions.

Possibly the timer.  Is this a direct-drive unit (providing your model number would clear up the details)?  The two shafts on the motor both turn any time the motor is running, it can't spin just one or the other.  The motor runs one direction for agitation, reverses for drain/spin.  The pump runs all the time with the motor but turns the "wrong" direction during agitation so doesn't move the water out then.  Reversing the motor is done by cams & contacts in the timer.

Could be a bad timer, timer contacts reverse polarity of power to the motor start winding between agitate/drain-spin to reverse direction of the motor. Need your washer model number to better help you out though.

I would remove the motor and set it on the floor still wired up, place your foot on it and try spin mode. If it just hums, it appears to be a bad timer. There is no extra speed switch on this model that could cause this problem.

I removed motor and then reassembled. Now everything is working. I guess I had a loose wire or an intermittent timer issue. Not sure what changed, but it is working. Thanks much for the advice!
