The Downside...

There is one possible problem with making new Whirlmananorgepooltags look so much like the beloved centre-dial Maytags of old. People associate that look with genuine quality, and if they're disappointed, it can generate real resentment. I know someone with a new Mustang, purchased specifically because it so strongly reminded its purchaser of his beloved 1970 model. He has had nothing but problem after problem, and I think he's madder than he would be otherwise, since the disappointing new car is styled to look so much like the good old reliable ones he remembers.

I really think the way for Whirly to go with Maytag is as a premium line, with extra design and build quality.

Sandy,

You are absolutely correct.
I am a big fan of the "real" DUAL Hi-Fi products. About 10 years ago, I made the mistake of buying a very well styled radio/cd player.
One of the biggest pieces of junk I have ever seen. My mistake, I should have checked - but that was precisely what the manufacturer wanted...it looked and felt on the outside like DUAL, but inside it was just trash. The brand name had been sold to some cheap outfit in the far east.
Upshot? I never, ever buy DUAL or AEG or any of the other household stuff on the market now-a-days. Once burned, twice shy.
Whirlpool's marketing idiots are obviously drinking their own joy-juice, no other way to explain this.
Put Maytag away for a few years. Let some grass grow over their grave. Then resurrect them as a genuinely high-quality, premium priced brand.
The US market was protected for far too long. The only thing keeping consumers "true" to their domestic brands is the lack of experience with the good foreign brands (and stupidity like LGs customer service). As soon as the consumers realize that the US brands no longer are better - just more expensive - that will be all she wrote.
Was that way with consumer electronics. Is that way with cars. But it just does not seem to be a lesson worth the learning in the domestic industry.

I know the quality of the machines is probably better with the Whirlpool innards, but it's no more a Maytag than my new Frigidaire TL is really a Frigidaire.

I'll never forget making my first washer purchase in 1984. I was finally replacing the Kenmore Model 80 my parents had since I was an infant. And damn it, I was FINALLY, going to get myself a Frigidaire washer! Much to my dismay, I opened what looked like a Frigidaire washer and my heart sank. Wound up buying a Whirlpool with a winged Surgilator instead.

Dryer Door

Yep, that's Whirly all right. That was one of the things I never liked about my DD Whirlys- the washer lid handle and the dryer door handle looked cheap.

Only because they WERE cheap, you understand...

Maytag Knob

DADoES:

Maytag always used a side-swing door, also true for many Whirlys, so that part looks fine to me. It would be a nice touch, though, if Whirlpool would put the Maytag chrome knob on Maytag models.

Probably won't happen- the die that stamps Whirly dryer doors is probably set up to punch out the opening for the Whirly handle all at one go. Putting the Maytag knob on the door would require a whole new die and a separate production run to make doors for Maytag-branded units, which is ex-freakin'-SPENSIVE.

Yes, side swing is good. But IMHO the door is positioned too low in the cabinet. Somehow that looks like a cheap design to me. The newer Whirlpools have the door slightly higher in the cabinet, which would look more like a genuine Maytag design.

This Whirlpool has a slightly different door, but looks much better I think.

I don't like it....

Saw the new "Maytag" at Sears and I think the Whirlpool and Kenmores are better. The stainless steel tub of the new Maytag has a nasty seam at the side and the holes seemed kinda sharp. There was an Atlantis (norgetag) there and the stainless steel was smoother. The Kenmore had a much smoother porcelain tub and I liked the control panel of the Whirlpool better. They better do something about the tub if they hope to sell any, I find it a real turn off.
