Look what I just got. 
Who says there weren't machines which would have had A rated spins in the 60's?

It was in my local repair shop, surrounded by Hoover Juniors
Talk about every cloud has a silver lining! This morning sadly the pump gave out on my Hoover after 16 years of faithful service. When I was at the shop booking the repairman I spotted this in the corner. It really puts modern build quality to shame, there are hardly any parts yet it weighs a ton. Metal lid, chrome top, enamel (I think) housing and a copper spin tub! Despite it being full of grit and dead bugs (eww) after a good clean it works great. I assume this has the typical Hotpoint 3100rpm spin but can anyone confirm that for me? It gets things drier than I've ever seen!
As for the Hoover, hopefully the pump is just blocked rather than broken but either way it will be up and running again by tonight. The repairman is coming at half 4.

Well the repairman has been
The pump wasn't salvegable, now, regrettably, it has a magnetic Candy pump
, it's not as bad as some of them, but it takes noticably longer to empty the drum now and ofcourse theres that annoying chugging. On the plus side the repairman was very nice and let me keep the old pump to play around with and at least the machine is back up and running again.

Great find.
They are certainly very smart looking spinners - love the chrome top rim and blue spinner lid.
Information courtesy of one of Chestermikes brochures:
this spinner was on sale alongside the Hotpoint 1502, Empress, Countess, princess and second version supermatic, as well as the 'Hotpoint Spin dryer De Luxe'. The latter was the tall, rectangular shaped spinner with a pump, whereas your new purchase is the gravity drain ' Hotpoint spin dryer'.
The de luxe machine was a 3100rpm spinner - effectively the spinner part of the supermatic, but cut off from the washtub.
The standard machine was slightly slower, with a rpm of 2850.
Hope the info above is useful.
Qustion for you - do you know the model number of your new machine? The rectangular spinners were model 1012, but i have never found out what the cylinder machine is.

And as you have already found out incredibly good at extracting water.

On the subject of pumps for your Hoover, as you might know i am also a Hoover fan (old machines) and have collected quite a few spares for them among these being "pumps", also new ones appear on ebay from time to time.
I could have let you have one of mine, but if your happy with the magnetic pump then thats fine

Thanks for posting! This has now resolved a mystery for me as my great aunt had this spinner and I never knew what it was. I think the label faced away or had fallen off.
Having played about a bit with my twin-tub 9404 I can confirm how wonderful the spin is (3100rpm). The only problem is that it can leave my clothes very creased. When the weather is better I will do a film. I want to modify the lid (shock horror) so I can see what's going on.

This spinner is a 1005 and the serial number is 66884 64 if anyone could possibly be so kind as to date it for me?
Bit of a shame it's not a 3100, but tbh I think you'd be hard pushed to extract anymore water, and still its 50rpm faster than most. The spout is usually dry after a minute with a huge load of towels and they dry within a few hours over the airer. Also I don't really like the idea of an autopump-more parts to go wrong.
One thing which amazed me about this spinner is how quiet it is, just a slight motor hum but most of what you hear is wind whistling through the spout. Much quieter than other spinners I've heard and certainly surprisingly quiet when you consider how noisy Hotpoint's washers are.
As for the Hoover, since the new pump has been fitted it fills higher with water and seems to extract better. Perhaps I can put up with the gravelly sounding Candy pump for now, especially considering the £67 charge for parts and labour. Besides it's no where near as bad as the pump on say, my Mum's Whirlpool. Thanks for the offer though. I'll definately bear that in mind if anything else goes wrong.

I am pretty sure that i am right with the date code.
The numbers referring to the date are the two seperated from the main serial number by a gap - hence me asuming the 64.
I am very fond of their styling.
Were one to come up on ebay again, and be close enough to collect, i would snap one up myself.

The American made GM Frigidaire Unimatic's of the 50's spun as fast as 1140 rpm, with relatively large tubs, so of course they would have been "A" rated for spin efficiency. As I recall, Robert/Unimatic1140 has done moisture extraction tests and the Unimatic ranks right up there at the top of the list.

only thing that it needs
is a new handle on the lid, its cracked in the style of the handle on so many 95 series Hotpoints lol. Guess it adds to the Hotpointy-ness of it
and it dosen't effect the way it works so I'll live with it

Hi Mathew, very nice find, so much better when its unexpected as well...These where very sturdy spinners (reminds me of the early AEG models) although it spins at 2,800rpm it will give the same extraction rate as the later 3,100 models as yours has a larger diameter copper drum!!!
Can you check if this has a direct drive motor?? or a belt drive?? have often wondered, altghough you could assume that the later Hotpoint spinners & twinnys have direct drive if you didnt know about the clutch etc..
This was one of four Hotpoint spinners out at the same time, the round one, the small square gravity drain, the tall thin gravity drain & the tall thin autopump...(hails Paul for numbers!!!)

Creases With Spinners
It is important that laundry be cool if not cold when spun, otherwise spinning will cause some bad creases that will defy ironing and or all other attempts at removal.
According to my Hoover repair and service manual, creasing is also caused by leaving items too long in the spinner. Hoover recommends no longer than 3-4 minutes for most items.
