Hi group! I've rediscovered Fresh Start detergent, the 1/4 cup powder. I've forgotten how well it cleans and is a low-sudser. Is there anyone else out there that's a fan who can give their feedback on this as well? Also, since Colgate no longer owns it, has anyone tried it since Phoenix Brands got it and does it still perform the same?

I used to use Fresh Start back in my college days (early 70's). The only reason I bought it was so that I can have that cool bottle that the powdered detergent cam in. It made it much easier going to and from the washateria.

But it did clean well and had a nice light scent to it. I used it for several years. The place I went to wash clothes had Frigidaire
Jet Action machines.

Fresh Start

is definately one of my favorites! I love the light, fresh scent and it works great in my HE front load LG Washer. Yes, Phoenix Brands does own Fresh Start now, but Colgate Palmolive still makes the brand for Phoenix. It is not the same product we all remember back in the 70's,(It was loaded with phosphates back then) but, I would still highly recommend it. It sells here in Florida for about $4.69 a bottle.

Enzymes were Fresh Start's claim for superior performance and it was good on protein stains, but it did not have the enzymes for going after oily dirt. That was the great advance in the condensed low sudsing powders like Wisk, Tide, Fab Cheer(?)and others that appeared in the 80s. I don't know if the lipo bashing enzymes are used in powder detergents anymore since liquid detergents seem to work better on oily soils. Fresh Start used to have a higher percentage of phosphates than many dishwasher detergents.

Have a commercial laundry detergent (Ecolab), that boasts great cleaning results on oily dirt, yet contains basicaly nothing more than phosphates (STPP), washing soda, and surfactants. Give damn good results, and one can always add enzyme containing oxygen bleach to the mix if desired.

Any store in the South carry Fresh Start-Really liked the stuff-used it when I lived in an apartment house-the bottle was more convenient to haul to the laundy room than a box. Also loved how that jar of Fresh Start glowed like a glowing orb under my UV lamp!

It hasn't been available here for years. I didn't know it was still made till joining this site.
