I wonder how many filthy minded guys though I was pimping a white stilletto wearing, Ford Escort Coupe driving dizzy blonde???? LMAO

well im not, Im just sharing something that took me by surprise today.

I was in Marks and Spencers today having a nosey at the food hall and I noticed that all their Oakham Chickens have the county they were raised in and the farmers name.

I bought a Bird raised in Essex. what a great idea! im all for product traceability and I think its great consumers get to see exactly who farmed their meat.

Come on Tesco I just know you can catch up!

Somebody here must love to have a chat about food production issues, something im very passionate about myself.

Nick

the rural view

Hi Nick

I live in a very rural village in East Sussex. I do whenever I can support the organic farm produce. Meat from these farmers is infinately nicer than supermarket meat even their "best" stuff.

I am against cruelty to animals and I think some of the supermarkets run a real factory line of animals. The meat is often white and pale with no flavour (you can taste the suffering). Unfortunately, it's cheap and people can't afford to buy from organic farms.

I could talk about food issues to the cows come home, especially about what is done to our food and the amount of chemicals in it.

Even though I love meat..

I try not to think of it as being from an animal. It's kind of unsettling. We have a freind who said she never eats anything that has a face on it.
One time I was at my brother in laws house and they were serving deer steaks from a deer they shot and while we were eating it they started passing photos of the deer we were eating around the table. I found it highly disturbing.

being a chef and workin for tescos i have such a massive wealth of knowledge myself. And i agree with you, but i personally dont agree with some organic products. Free range meat eggs etc should be available to all. We should all abandon intensively reared meat and eat free range but less often. Come on people there are other sources of Protein available. Cheaper Soya mince can make a great cottage pie that no one would notice the difference. This would mean we have the money to spend on better reared meat. Im not screamish when it comes to hacking up dead animals either lol. Yet i cant watch casualty or hospital programmes. Pass the bucket. . .

Sorry I meant free range and not organic. Nick I am of the same opinion as you. I think it is so sad when you walk down the street and you see some chicken carcass on the floor that some piss head ate last night at the Kebab shop. (Yes I've done it too). But people forget that, that Kebab was once a live animal. I do think we need more respect for food and where it comes from. The thing is it's all so sterile now, it's easy to forget.

no we cant live on milk and eggs but we certainly dont need to eat as much meat as we are doing. 5oz is plenty for anyone with a good diet rich in other foods. There is too much emphasis on meeting the demand of the general public to supply meat. Im a fat pie eating northern guy if you ever saw one but i can satisfy my appetite with plenty of vegetables. I eat small amounts of cheese and i love all fish and using soya. It breaks my heart to know animals are treated in such a way. Im a snob when it comes to chicken. Its free range or nothing. And while the Oakham chickens are not necessarily free range they have a better quality life.

just been discussing this issue with my housemate and we nearly ended up falling out LOL. We are agreeing to disagree. She reckons cheap meat for all, however reared is good. Oh dear. . . . . Nick

No lol. Shes a true creweite like me. Shes from the less well of part of town i suspect. Ducks and runs . . . Shes armed with a cosmopolitan magazine and i can sense it will be thrown at me.

Crewe, never been there, but spent a lot of time in nearby Stoke - I found that I was easily able to be rather promiscuous in Stoke.

Good luck with getting Cosmo thrown at you - it's a really good read IMO! And a big `hi' to your feisty flatmate.

Cheep meat for all.

nickuk, you naughty bloke! :-) You live in Essex, although your accent suggests someone of better stock. hehe

Oh, that reminds me - there is a place in Essex called Stock!!! LOL That is my surname of course, and it thought that my surname originates from Essex! In any case, we are literally just a few metres from Essex – see link.

Notice the black jagged line. That is the Hertfordshire/Essex border, so I’m ‘nearly’ Essex! That border was moved back in 1992/94, so we were then in Essex with one half of the street (the newer part), but the rest of the street (the older part) was in Hertfordshire. LOL I know – very strange! Different rubbish collection, council tax, etc… Anyway…

Cheap meat is bad meat. There is allsorts of nasty stuff in cheap meat.

I know we cannot always afford organic stuff, but I have to eat it because of my condition (ME/CFS/CFIDS), as it is recommended that I avoid non-organic meat and vegetables.

Other Nick (hehe) - you said your housemate suggests “cheap meat for all”. In my opinion, that is wrong because the quality of much of the produce in supermarkets is dire. We simply do not realise how bad our food has become – ask any butcher. Yes, butchers are an endangered species, sadly.

We do not have to eat organic, but we should try to look after the animals and the staff rearing them. I’m no Left-wing tree-hugger (hehe), but I we have a duty to act responsibly.

In any case, what goes in must come out; we are what we eat – we should not eat rubbish.

Rant rant rant. Teaching/lecturing mode off now. LOL

But there is nothing wrong with the odd treat that may be bad for us. It is just that we should not eat poor food daily.

Crewe

is like Royston Vasey. You never leave! LMAO. Well to be honest me and angela have both said if we were ever able to we would both move to essex. We both love the people there, really friendly and my favourite jam is made there too as a bonus, good ol Tiptree! God more food, off to raid the fridge! Ok not much there. . . Whos for organic Houmus and sticks of carrot? Honestly thats all i have in at the min! Got to be something. . .

carl you cant have the carrot! Its a basic Tesco non organic one. But you can have the houmus. Whats left of it anyway. Mmm it sure was tasty. Tiptree jam is easily the best. I have raspberry in at the minute. It has loads of seeds in it. Seeds mean real jam to me. None of that smooth shit. But i buy every fruit variety depending on my mood. The marmalade is sublime! The only jam i ever buy is Tiptree. Im proud to live in Cheshire for our cheese making ability and the excellent quality local pork. We also have a great local farm shop that is a rural Waitrose for the quality and convinience. And finally we have a Waitrose here too. If i could afford my weekly shop there i would too. Their butchers counter is top notch. Sadly our decent butcher went ages ago. The ones left are rubbish. I try to support them but half a lb of bacon here and there is nothing really. They are sourcing awful meat too at the minute. Sorry this post is not presented well, im using my mob phone to do it. Nick.
