Why is my Miele acting like this?

Hello everyone.

Right, this morning my mum called me downstairs and told me "something is wrong with the washing machine." At the end of the cycle, all or most Miele's do an anti-crease and at this point the pump should be OFF. I understand after the Final Spin, the machine shuts the pump off, then turns it back on, does a little tumble and at this point should stay off. However my Miele as of today has just begun turning the pump continuously on and off after each turn. I have included a video on my YouTube channel for anyone to see.

As can be shown, I am very inexperienced with Miele and would not dare to touch anything on the machine, I am assuming it is a fault with the microprocessor? Or processor of the machine that has causes this. It's so far done it on the Express Wash and Cottons 40ºc cycle, so any help would be appreciated.
The machine is a Miele W562 Prestige Plus 6 1300rpm, we have so far had it for 6.5 years (brought anuary 27th 2009) and I believe it is a 2002/2004 model next in line from the Premier 520/500 models. I would prefer to leave this to either a qualified Miele engineer or for someone who can at least identify the problem and knows a lot about Miele.

No other problems have yet taken place with the machine.

Not sure if this is any help to you. After watching your clip I've just run an express cycle to see how my W562 finishes the program as yours seems to be a little different so I've done a few rough timings. With mine the pump doesn't run once the drum has come to rest on Express and Cottons programs ( drum stopped 38 seconds from timer going to zero)on Min Iron and Easy Care the pump does continue to run for a few seconds.
Then 20 seconds after the drum stops the pump starts again for ten seconds without the drum turning. The anti crease cycle then commences 15 seconds later without the pump running.

I know this might be a silly question but have you cleaned the pump out? It could be something simple like the machine sensing that there is more water in the sump than there should be. If you've not done this before make sure you've got a large container under the flap as there's usually quite a lot of water left in.

Hope you manage to get this sorted, I dread anything going wrong with mine!

Hi Ian!

Thanks for going to the effort of that, I have concluded it might be a fault with the PCB. Not going to worry much as thankfully it's doing it only at the end of the cycle. However if or once it starts trying to do things like spin full of water or anything then I will have to probably call a Miele engineer or simply replace it.

As for the pump, I cleaned it out about 2 or 3 weeks ago, literally used a sharp object to scrape off the limescale inside, it's still doing it so I'm thinking best not try to get into the Service Cycle or config menu as it may mess it up even more or void our warranty.

Descale the washing machine

Hi,

I would suggest to get some Miele washing machine descaler from the online shop and run a 95 degree programme. There could be limescale build up in the vent pipe which causes the drain pump to run thinking there is still water in the machine.

The hoses from the pump etc are susceptible to blockages and when they become blocked it affects the spinning and draining.

UPDATE

Hi guys, thank you for your kind and helpful suggestions, however my Miele as sudden as it started has apparently gone back to normal today??? I had a few people on Facebook telling me it could be that the software needs updating, however the 'PC' light did not illuminate or flash, so until the next fault we'll just have to see from there.

I'm with Rod & Rich - it would certainly do no harm to run an empty 95C cotton cycle with either a washing machine descaler/cleaner or a couple of dishwasher tablets (I'd probably use the latter as I'm too cheap to buy the washer cleaner and don't think it does a lot the tablets won't) to clear it out. You may find it does it occasionally, and if there's a bit of limescale or a partial clog in the pipework somewhere, that would cause an intermittent issue like this.

Also, not sure I'd recommend using a sharp object to scrape limescale off the pump either - but a good cleanout should help with that too.

I'm usually using pure powdered citric acid. In Germany, it's sold under the Heitmann brand I think, and I'm pretty sure there is simmilar in the UK. It's cheaper then most cleaners (375g now are I think less then 2€ here and you can get 2-3 uses out of it, depending on degree of limescale buildup), and you can adapt dosage pretty easy. And basicly, it contains the same as most other washing machine cleaners.

I usually use half a pack, set it to 95°, let it run untill cool down, and unplug the machine for half an hour. (Especially on Mieles, the cycle time is dramaticly shortend if no load is sensed. But with the model you have, you can work around it by just opening the door after the time has been shortend. This will cause the machine to perform a full cycle, independent of load sensed.) Then, I just plugg it back in and let it finish. If there really is a lot of build up, you could just raise the dose or, after the half hour soak, restart the boilwash cycle without draining (if possible) to get more heating and time.

DW tablets are raising ph levels, while acids lower them. It should not make a difference, but I'm somehow suspicious if they reach ph levels good enough to actually descale properly.
