Why Maytags Are So Great?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

OMG!

They wanted a pair in that shape for the museum?

Does their condition mean that Whirlpool has some control panel glass and some door latches on hand that they're not telling anyone about?

Perhaps Whirlpool is doing this for some inspiration. The brand needs all the help it can get since the original company's self destruction.

I know. When I saw this story on the morning news I was thinking the same thing about the broken panel, and about how we have more museum-quality versions of these machines within the membership here and, I believe, in pink no less.

The sh*tty end of the stick...

NOT a good deal for her. She's not going to be very satisfied with what she was sent. What a wonderful dependable care set.

I guess the positive side of this is that there is one vintage Maytag pair that won't be getting krushed, but her replacement machines will deserve such a fate sooner rather than later, that is for sure.

There is some confusion about the year of those machines.

The panel glass is an issue, unless you have friends here and the dryer door latch can probably be fixed by prying apart the door pieces and reattaching the spring and tightening the set-screw in the handle.

I have a set in pink, a set in yellow, a white washer and turquoise dryer - but I don't want a Centennial direct drive washer. Especially not after seeing the story about the bacteria in those direct-drive petri dishes!

Who in their right mind would want that old piece old junk? Better to send them to me for proper disposal :>D

BTW, that set looks like 60 or newer. If the set was indeed a late 50's model, I believe it should have the horizontal stripes on the glass instead of the newer snow flake design.

Discuss!

I call bullshit!!

I just replayed the video and that dryer is a 701, which made its first debut in 1961. This is NOT a 50's set!!!

Dan, You Are the Man!

Call Channel 2 and let 'em have it! Then again, the owner is old enough to perhaps not remember exactly when she got those machines, so it may not be the reporter's fault. I guess this calls for a future visit to the subject museum to see what vintage Whirlpool will bestow upon these.

Oh, and I'm still waiting for your e-mail address re: some local stuff, Dan.

I think MayPool should check out Rick R's set in post #385349 regarding why does everyone think Maytag's are so great. Rick's are in pristine condition, better than what they got from the old lady.

Yeah, I was thinking I could "tag" this onto the "What's so great . . ." thread but decided it deserved one of its own. I suppose Mrs. Thompson will like the new machines for a little while if she can get the hang of operating them. Nothing could be simpler than a center dial Maytag and that may be a big factor in how well she likes or, more likely, how much she dislikes the new pair. I'm rooting for her to ask for her old machines back. Maybe that would wake up the people at Whirlpool and point them back towards Newton, IA at some time in the future.
