Why You Need A Controlled Suds Detergent

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Since Jane was from New York and New Jersey originally, she should have had a New York accent. However she attended Barnard College, one of the "Seven Sisters" of higher education for women. Other Seven Sister schools are Wellsley, Radcliffe, Vassar, etc. These schools are very selective in who is admitted and who is not. It's also where she probably picked up her posh accent.

Wonder Just What Is In All Detergent

It is very dense my box of All with "Bleach, Borax, and Brighteners" but box does not say a thing about contents.

Know have had a few incidents where the bluish colour left marks on one's wash. A quick rewashing removed them and can only assume it was product not dissolved properly.

Despite being low to nil suds the stuff can be difficult to rinse if not dose correctly in the Miele at least. This could be the borax as that substance is known to be hard to rinse out of fabrics.

never did the test myself....but there was talk of detergent manufacturers to claim a detergent was heavy duty, it had to weight a lot, so actual sand was added to the formula to add that weight....

the test consisted of adding a cup of detergent to a quart of warm water and stir, the detergent should completely disolve, any particles sinking to the bottom would be considered sand.....which most claimed were their red, blue or green power cleaning particles, which was really colored sand.....

has anyone seen or done this test?

Hillary Brooke was known for her cultured accent. She also was known for her sense of cultured fashion. She too was from New York and attended Columbia University, which has been affiliated with Barnard College since 1900. There is a very good chance that Hillary & Jane may have known each other.

We have friends where the wife went to Radcliffe. She has a similar voice.
At a dog adoption event several years ago she and her husband came by to visit. After awhile another woman, very well dressed by the way, stopped by to look at the dogs. All of a sudden the fancy woman said to our friend "You went to Radcliffe, didn't you?" Of course the answer was yes. Later on after our friends left I saw this woman again and asked her how she knew the other woman went to Radcliffe. She responded "Radcliffe women speak in a certain manner and dress a certain way, you can always tell."

Lol!

I can usually tell what parts of Tennessee people are from, but that's about it!

Launderess, I haven't had the spotting problem with my vintage All, but will watch out for it. I love it -- one of the best scented detergents ever and it performs beautifully.

Something about her ad script rings slightly false. Anyone knows from watching FKB that the Andersons always had front loading washers so how would she think that she needed thick suds to clean? Wasn't there an episode where the little monster oversudsed the Westinghouse?

That washing action in the thick suds demo was slowed by some means other than the suds. You can tell by the way the load moved at the bottom of the tub. Maybe they made the belt slip, varied the power to the motor or something.

Seeing her ironing made me wonder about something. What do you suppose would happen if you poured something flamable into a steam iron, maybe lighter fluid or naptha? Would it explode in the water tank, ignite just above the fill opening or would flames shoot out of the steam holes when you moved it to the ironing position? That could possibly make a great video for Extreme Ironing fans, especially if you used one of those metal mesh ironing boards without a pad so that you could see the flames blowing through the board.

I remember an episode where the "Little Monster" was gathering any clothes in the house she could find and loading them into the Westinghouse FL washer-One of the things was one of Bettys dresses she was about to wear to a party.Kathy started the washer before Mom could stop her-and when the washer was stopped,Bettys dress was too soaked for her to wear to the party.Kathy was in the Doghouse!

Ironic

I was thinking of buying a box of All today for my trip to the laundromat either tomorrow or Sunday.

I've not seen it stated on the box, but is All still considered a "controlled suds" detergent?

Posh American accents

Seems to me the American wife of the Earl of Grantham, Cora Levinson, in Downton Abbey has one of those posh "Seven Sisters" accents. She's played by an English actress, so it might have been a bit of a challenge for her to adopt the right American edge without going overboard. It's actually very subtle, and it took me a while to realize that she was supposed to be an American. Her mother, Marge Levinson, however, played by Shirly MacClaine, has a broad New York style accent that is hard to miss. Not to mention the garish makeup and costuming. It will be interesting to see what sort of accent, if any, Paul Giamatti adopts when he portray's Cora's "Playboy Brother" Howard Levinson come to visit Downton in the upcoming season four.

Married to a limey...

Well, that would explain why Cora's accent is so subtle. Even the article you linked says that her accent "gently hints" at her American origins. Probably McGovern simply used her normal voice in the drama, since it's an American accent tempered by two or more decades of life in Britain. Just like Cora's would be.

Good casting choice... thanks for the correction!

I did not hear an accent

with Ms. Wyman, all I heard was a nicely spoken, educated woman.

Ms. Brooke, a bit of over enunciation, but nothing outrageous.

I have no idea otherwise.
