will not advance past prewash

My Vintage Kitchenaid DIshwasher (KDS17) overfilled. I replaced the fill valve and now it runs (and does not overfill) but only to the prewash cycle. Water feels hot and if I cancel - it drains just fine. The fill valve I replaced was a bit different than the valve that was bad - could this be my problem or am I dealing with a bad timer? Possibly something else? there was a fair amount of water that drained out and spilled out on the floor when the fill valve died. Does the fill valve have any fonction relating to timing that could be causing this or are these two problems happening at the same time?

The timer and valve do not interact to stop the progression of any cycles. What cycle are you selecting? In a nutshell, if you select the soak cycle, the timer will pause at certain points and will then progress after a few minutes. Have you tried starting with a regular Normal cycle and see if it goes thru from beginning to end? On cycles other than soak and scrub, the timer will advance a bit and then commence filling and washing until it finishes the cycle.
Rinse and hold will advance the cycle to start and then advance past the rest of the segments and past the dry portion and then shut off.
Not saying the timer is bad or not. You just need to be sure of what each cycle does before condemning the timer. It can also be a worn program switch too. Keep us posted as you troubleshoot and we will get you through it.
