The Original Woolite
Was mainly SLS or some other same type surfactant, much the same as most if not all "wool" washes sold in supermarkets.
The more creme formulas such as Persi's "Perwoll" , Delicare, and others besides surfactants add fabric conditioners and other chemicals to enhance fabric feel and protect wool, silk and other danties.
Anonic and Non-ionic surfactants aren't affecte by hard water the way soap is, nor do they require water softening chemicals to sequester or otherwise deal with calcium and other minerals. With their neutral pH levels, such surfactants are great for cleaning protien fibres that are harmed by alkaline substances.
IIRC, there was talk that Woolite now contains or did contain OBAs and other chemicals to increase cleaning action and make it a more general purpose light duty laundry product. Personally have used dollar store or supermarket brand "wool wash" liquids and found no difference in results when compared to Woolite. Well Woolite tended to be a tad thicker, but that was about all.
