For those attempting to access YT videos on their own and or those linked as part of posts on AW.Org note that YT has upped their game. They are now blocking (or trying to) VPN and various ad blocking apps when detected.

Sometimes one can watch a YT video as part of post here in group, but clicking on link to "watch on YT) does not work or video won't play.

Get one's Britcom fix nightly (Last of Summer Wine, Open All Hours, Rising Damp..) on YT. Noticed earlier this week couldn't get videos to work.

Also noticed videos linked in posts on AW.org either displayed message about "disabled content" or only worked if viewed onsite. Clicking "Watch On YT" link took one to a disabled video.

Normally when that happens simply change location on VPN and things are good to go. That didn't work either. Finally went over to another browser (Microsoft Edge) which one doesn't have VPN or very strong ad blocking app and viola; YT videos worked as per usual.

Quick read up on internet showed many others were having similar issues and only way round seems to be disabling ad blocking app and possibly VPN.

Happily Daily Motion has tons of Britcoms and works with VPN and adblock app enabled so that's me sorted for now.

One realizes there is no such thing as a free lunch when it comes to websites, but things are getting ridiculous. Amazon now has joined YT in having adverts before, after or during videos.

I use chrome with adblock & adblock plus. This issue started for me a couple days ago. Now I've disabled them and installed the UBlock extension. Works great on YT

YT blocking of embedded videos playing off-site typically is related to the permissions set as such by the channel owner, or copyright of background music or other copyright issue.  An embedded video that won't play via the "play on YouTube" link probably is set as private.

These days, it's all about the clicks.  If I see a story on my news feed that has a "read more" button to click that takes me to the source's web site, I stop reading.  I will not be used in this manner.

It seems to me that between Chrome and Edge, there's an effort to make other browsers like Firefox, et al unusable.  They are both aiming to corner the browsing market and put their lesser competitors out of business.  Google owns YT, so it appears their unquenchable thirst for more revenue has led to this ruthless and greedy behavior, which inconveniences all of us.

Most of my tv viewing is watching YT videos so I broke down and subscribed. Well worth it for me. There are movies on there and old tv series but mainly I just watch videos on the things that interest me, like railroad videos, travel, history, oh yeah and typeriters and mixers etc.. LOL I probably watch less than 30 minutes a day watching cable tv/ news channels . I would get rid of all our cable tv channels if the other half would let me lol.

I've been using uBlock Origin for years.  I see no ads on YT, other than it refused to function with uBO for a day-ish around the time the no-blocker policy effected until a pending uBO update propagated.

I also watch YT via Smart TV, first with the YT app for the TV's native Android OS*, now via a Roku.  And occasionally on the dumb plasma via an LG BluRay player with onboard YT.  Can't put an adblocker on those but most YT ad sequences provide a Skip option available after 5 to 30 secs.

*Android TV operating system sucks a lot compared to Roku.

I rarely use YT, but when I do I do not yet get messages about my ad blocker.   I refuse to use TT, though relatives spend wayyyyy to much time on it and send me links.

An ad blocker is crucial for me, have not seen an ad in decades. A few sites I visit force me to turn it off and so far I have found alternatives.  The few times I did turn it off the content was obscured with so many ads cutting up the text and flashing I quickly left.  Give me unobtrusive ads and I might leave the blocker off, otherwise you just drive me away.

For Firefox, there's FadBlock

Friendly Adblock for YouTube.

Search "Manage extensions" with fadblock. I tipped the developer. Ain't failed me yet.
