Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Ron, that'd make me a Neanderthal as well as we have both cars on your hit list.

In Queensland, registration on an 8cyl car has gone up to just a smidge under $1K per year (Incl CTP). The 5yo Land cruiser is about to be replaced with a new TD one, which gets much better ecconomy and better emissions, however as it still has 8 cylinders, it cops the same rego costs as the Petrol. We camp twice a year and traverse the beach or bay islands 6 times a year. We've seen friends do it in a CRV, but they can never take as much camping gear with them, and usually end up with bits broken off.

I've got a 2007 falcon wagon, that I bought second hand at 18 months old for $19K and only 16K Km on the clock. It averages about 12L/100km around town driven carefully as low as 8L/100km on the highway, yet still accelerates comfortabley on the open road, and when I need to take the dog somewhere along with a boot full of picnic gear I can, and still 4 adults and a baby in the car. If need be I get three TL washers and a dishwasher in the back with the seats down. Its all horses for courses. I beleive things need to be more efficient, and compared to my old Falcon wagon, its about 3L/100km more so. If we had a smaller car on either front, it would be difficult to cart, 3 toolboxes, plus all our washing, the dog and god knows what other junk between our house and Michaels Mum's each weekend. (the joys of having an older parent)

If we were a sedan only household, we'd need to take a trailer up and down the 120km each fortnight when we visit between houses with or without various family members.

Thats the reason we bought new falcon wagon as comparatively it is cheaper to run than the Landcruiser. That will change however when the new one arrives in November, as Highway cycle its good for 10L/100km, from a 2.5ton vehicle thats pretty impressive.

So you are right in some ways, but to write off the big aussie six as being inefficient and old is unfair, you get a lot of space for your money, and the fuel consumption is nothing like what it was in the mid 90's.

Yikes.

I've always thought of Mazda as having superior design/craftsmanship.

I'm wondering if the best Japanese vehicles are of the type that the Japanese themselves tend to drive. And that would be the smaller, four cylinder cars, not the bigger ones that try to compete with larger American and European cars. Very few people in Japan drive large luxury cars. With Mazda, the Mazda3 gets great reviews for both performance and reliability, and the Mazdaspeed3 even better reviews. That would probably be the Mazda I'd get if I were in the market.

Mercedes, at least in the USA, has also had a lot of problems in the past decade or two. Consumer Reports will document this - they've been less reliable than Ford, for example. Me, I've had practically no problems with my '99 Chrysler 300M. It was seeping some transmission fluid at the radiator, but tightening the hose clamps (did it myself) fixed that issue. It's always seeped a little engine oil from the rear main seal - I'm told that was an issue with the early ones that was fixed later on - but the dealer denied it was happening and I left it at that.

Oh, the hydraulic struts that support the trunk lid have pretty much lost most of their oomph. I haven't gotten around to replacing them yet - it's not a big deal for me. But I think I could find aftermarket ones that work as well or better than the stock ones (which predictably are a bit expensive for what they are).

The button for the rear trunk lock release on the dash kept on falling/popping out. I heated it up in some hot water and bent the hooks outward - hasn't happened since.

Then again, I have put only about 40,000 miles on the car in 10 years. I like to keep it fresh ;-).

Rendezvous a twin to the Aztek? I don't think so. The Aztek, though a bit more odd-looking, has much more character.

I've had my '04 Aztek for just over 5 years now, and have been quite satisfied with it. Are there things I would change about it? Sure. But, I can say that about every car I've owned, or driven, or ridden in!

No matter what the survey said, I'll take the Aztek, or any other vehicle with personality, over the cookie-cutter Toyotas, Hondas, and the like!!!

Nathan...

He is a neaderthal....I seriously doubt you drag your knuckles on the ground and it has nothing to do with what he drives...

It is horses for courses....and I know that there have been HUGE strides in efficiency, particularly here with Holden and Ford, and people should buy what suits their needs...

...and in your case, big does and more regularly than once a year...

Joe,

for your replacement for the Mazda have you considered the Buick Lucerne,
I have driven them and they have an even smoother ride than my Park Avenue, plus plenty of luxury appointments too. Just dont get the top trim CXS they only have a Northstar V-8, the midline CXL comes with the 3800 and can be loaded with all the options. It is what I will get when the Park Avenue needs replaced, it is a 99 with only 143,ooo trouble free miles

panthera,

It is good to hear that Subaru listens to their dealers wrt. issues even though GM doesn't apparently.

Your point about buying American is a complicated one these days. For instance, I own a 2007 Subaru that I love, and it's a Hoosier -- built at their "zero landfill" plant in Lafayette, IN. Yes technically it is a Japanese company (Fuji Heavy Industries no less) so some of the money goes back overseas. But it was built here in the US of at least 50% US content so... is it American? Is it ~more~ American than the Buick Rendezvous made in Mexico of 40% US content?

For me it was important to get a good car from a company that listens to its customers and treats its workers fairly than to pick a particular country of origin. I just lucked out getting one built in Indiana, which I still think is somewhat ironic and funny.

Oh, and a reliable car was really important after my two bad experiences with VW. As a friend of mine who used to do road rallying once said "Subaru's may not always run flawlessly, but they ALWAYS run!"

My 97 Outback blew two headgaskets in 120K miles and subaru poo poo'd them both.. My sister has a 2005 Outback and although Subaru has fixed a few niggly things, they have listned but not offered much hope for her leaking turbo at 67K...

My corolla's engine blew at 60,928 miles due to a faulty headgasket..Since i had bought it second hand at 12K miles, and didnt have the first two oil changes, toyota refused to fix it and blamed me for it (stated because i drive 30K+ a year, that was excessive wear and tear!!!...Its highway miles people)

Nissan is another can of worms.. I wouldnt hesitate to buy another nissan in a heart beat...I have had 5 nissans...And i want another some day..My first was a 2000 Nissan Altima and it was an awesome car.. I sold it to a girlfriend and she still has it with 219K miles and only a few issues (water pump/radiator, a window regulator and a valve cover gasket).. I then got a 2001 Model and it was just as good a car, i stupidly sold it to my mom with 98K and well she let it get repo'd cause she refused to work and pay for it My third was a 2003 Nissan Frontier and damn i miss that truck, the only minor issue had was a 2K miles the belt tensinor fell off and busted, they left a washer out during manufacture.. Nissan fixed it and gave a new truck to drive while mine was being fixed, Thats another truck i shouldnt have gotten rid of.. My 2005 sentra had an issue with the fuel pump and its a common issue with them not pressurisng right.. 17K it was replaced and again at 37K... My winshield washer fluid tank cracked in cold weather because i dumped some water in it to get by.. No questions asked, fixed by nissan... My Cooolent temp sensor died at 45K miles, i took it in, replaced by nissan no questions asked... And it was not under warranty.. I stupidly traded the car in January 07 for a same year stick shift corolla... Which i put 48K on in 11 months... And it had: A new serptine belt, battery, 2 sets of tires, 1 set of brakes, 2 engine fuel flushes, an induction service, 2 air filters, a maf sensor, a knock sensor, a fuel pump and a c;utch...I paid for most of the work.. When the engine blew, i said F-U to it.. And toyota never cared one/..The dm for toyota looked at it and said "Well theres a few bad apples in every crowd.. How about a 1500 voucher for a new toyota.. I told him to shove it..

Ford and i have a good relationship as well.. I have had a number of explorers, rangers, taurus, and such... And they never have failed me once.. Hell, when the transmisson croked at 72K miles on my 99 Taurus in 2003, i knew it was my dime and much to my shock (mind you i wasnt at my home dealer) Ford knew me by there computer and offerd to replace it at half cost.. No questions asked.. $900 and i was happy man..

GM.. I dunno..My current malibu is now leaving some doubt.. My radio just starting swtiching to am every now and then when you shut off the car and the car tends to run hot in heavy traffic..

My Hyundai is a super car and i would love anohter.. But the mantince is more and the T-belt every 60K is expensive..

I have had 42 cars in 10 years... I trade alot and drive alot...

No more Hondas, Toyotas, Chryslers, Acura and Saab's... Ickk poo...

I won't buy Fords, on principle

And the German and French governments dropped them from their approved list for a while after their white-supremacist advertising campaign in Poland at the turn of the century.

Take that with their ass-kissing up to the christianists and shafting us gays and I'd rather walk than give those people my hard earned money. Even if they built the best cars in the world.

Cadillac had the balls to tell the christianists to go to hell and to support us. That is a big reason for me to put up with GM's 'quality-issues'.

I've been eyeing the new LaCrosse that will be coming out soon. They have an AWD model available paired with the top of the line engine. It really looks to be a beautiful car. However, I am almost out of debt, the Mazda will be paid for in two months, I think I'm going to save my money, keep it about two more years and purchase something pre-owned with cash. No more debt! I'm sick of it! I have learned to hate owing people.

~My car is my mode of transportation. it is not an extension of my personality.

Nor is it intended to be an extension of or compensation for what mother nature did or did not give me as a pull-toy.

I am truly thankful that I have a vehicle, can afford the insurance, the gasoline, the repairs & maintenance and have paved road upon which to take it around.

I am even more thankful that my driving and/or my vehicle has not hurt anyone, caused propery damage or been stolen to use in a crime.

What is the most important thing put into a car?
LIFE.

When the time comes, I'd like 4-wd or AWD, 6-cylinders and an automatic transmission, as well as sattelite radio and a CD player. I'll get a rice-burner if I have to (Japanese/Asian) but I'd prefer not to. Subaru, and VW have been catching my eye lately.

Right now my 12 y.o. Saturn SLII with 135k miles has to remain in service. I can't afford a car pmt! So I send it good energy and hope it continues to serve me faithfully.

Keven,

I was surprised by your "white supremacist" comment about Ford Poland so I did some googling and found this.

Apparently Ford's advertising agency took some photos of workers at its British plant, but when it printed the photos in an ad campaign in Poland, it stuck white faces over the faces of non-white workers. The ad agency claimed it was done because the original photo "didn't represent the ethnic mix of Poland". Duh. What's next? Are we going to see ads in Minnesota for Columbian coffee with a blond haired blue eyed Swede's faced superimposed over that of Juan Valdez? How stupid can they be?

Ford lost nearly 3 million pounds in lost production after workers staged a protest strike over the incident.

You'd think Ford would be a little more careful about such things, considering the company's legacy of Henry Ford's virulent anti-semitism and the company receiving compensation from the USA for having its German plants bombed during WWII by the Allies. Oh, yeah, the plants were making military vehicles for the Nazis. How about that...

Yeah, FORD in the US also

has a long long history of racism and being nasty to Italian, Jews and gays.

They've just gotten better at PR.

Lee Iaccoca really pegged them for what they are in his book. I'd like to think they've improved, but it seems like something like this creeps out from under the wood work at that company every few years.

Probably will for as long as the significant owners are nasty people.

BMW also has a large private ownership contingent. Those two families, however, couldn't be any different to the Fords and still be members of the same race. Strong on human and workers' rights, competent and inventive and productive engineers in that family to this day.

Ford
I think thats so odd.. The ford dealers i've known, and worked with, have very strongly supported gays jewish people... They actually donated a van to the temple in my home town...

GO figure..

Sad to say, but i've decided to say good by to my Hyundai SUV with 150K...I am replacing it with a Ford Ranger/Mazda B2300 or Nissan Truck.. Maybe a Toyota truck, but there more expensive..I just want a simple second car and since my malibu has worked out, tis time for daddy to get a truck

Ford Dealers are not FOMOCO

We have to remember the difference between the two. I am sure there are GM dealers who don't support corporate policy of gay rights, too.

Just, when a company is so actively racist - look at that link from Sudsmaster - and so actively anti-gay in the 21st century, I see no reason to support them.
